Sponsor Our ArticlesKnoxville is buzzing with excitement as the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UT) has hit an incredible milestone this fall! Classes have been in session for a few weeks now, and it’s official—UT is welcoming an impressive 38,728 students to campus, up by 1,000 more than initially estimated when the semester began on August 19. That’s right, this academic year has kicked off with a bang!
As part of this record-breaking enrollment, a total of 6,804 first-year students have joined the Volunteer family, marking the Class of 2028. A significant reason behind this growth is the university’s remarkable 91.9% retention rate for first-year and sophomore students—up from just 86.5% in 2019. That’s a noteworthy leap of over 5% in just five years!
This fall’s numbers showed a healthy 6.7% increase from last year, with undergraduate enrollment growing by 6% and graduate student enrollment increasing by 10%. Chancellor Donde Plowman expressed immense pride in the campus community’s collective effort, stating, “The hands-on programming and community-building efforts that we have put into place over the last several years are paying off and helping ensure our students have the confidence and the resources they need to thrive here on Rocky Top.”
In what can only be described as an overwhelming show of interest, UT received 59,764 first-year applications. Out of those, a substantial 13,515 applications came from in-state students. The university offers a guaranteed admission opportunity for in-state high school students who meet the specified requirements, making it an attractive option for local students.
Chancellor Plowman also shared her enthusiasm about the retention growth, highlighting that returning students often indicate a greater likelihood of graduation. “The biggest thing that makes my heart happy is that the growth this year for the second year in a row is largely coming from the retention of last year’s students,” she explained. “If they come back their sophomore year, they’re probably going to graduate,” Plowman detailed, noting the significant impact of a strong retention rate.
It’s not just Knoxville seeing these trends; the entire UT System is thriving. Enrollment has risen at almost every campus, including UT Southern, UT Chattanooga, and UT Martin. The system is well on its way to meet a total enrollment goal of 71,000 students, set by UT System President Randy Boyd earlier this year.
During a recent meeting, President Boyd unveiled a new campaign called “Find Your UT.” This initiative aims to spotlight each campus and guide students toward the one that aligns best with their personal and academic interests. Boyd emphasized some fantastic talking points for the campaign, including the fact that nearly half of all students graduate debt-free. Additionally, he highlighted the benefits of the UT Promise scholarship program and the strong alumni network available for current students.
As the new semester unfolds, it’s clear that the University of Tennessee at Knoxville is setting the bar higher than ever before, embracing growth, retention, and community in a way that inspires. With these new records in place, the Volunteer family is certainly one to watch in the coming years!
