Exciting Changes at the United Way of Greater Knoxville

Knoxville, TN – It’s a big day for the United Way of Greater Knoxville (UWGK) as they announce some substantial changes in their leadership. After serving as CEO for five years, Matt Ryerson has decided to step down from his role. His resignation has been accepted by the board of directors, paving the way for new leadership and initiatives. Ryerson, who was brought on board in December 2019, played an important role in bridging the gap after Ben Landers’ impressive 26-year tenure as CEO.

A Fond Farewell to Matt Ryerson

Reflecting on Ryerson’s contribution, UWGK Board Chair Clarence Vaughn III shared, “Matt served as a bridge, following Ben Landers’ 26 years of leadership in the CEO position.” He went on to convey excitement about moving forward and embarking on the next chapter of this significant organization. The United Way has set its sights on continuing its mission with “intention, innovation, and dedication.”

Welcoming Interim CEO Chrystal Armstrong Brown

Stepping into the interim CEO role is Chrystal Armstrong Brown, who will take charge starting November 11. As the current Chief Impact Officer since April 2023, Armstrong Brown has proven to be a talented leader dedicated to the community. Vaughn emphasizes her passion for community welfare and her vision for innovative transformation, stating, “The board is thrilled to have her step into the Interim CEO position to provide stability and servant leadership throughout this transition.”

Prior to her time at UWGK, Armstrong Brown was vice president of program development for the Emerald Youth Foundation, showing her extensive experience in community-focused roles. She also previously took on the role of director of education at the United Way of Southwest Virginia.

The Board’s Next Steps

The board of directors is already rolling up their sleeves to identify the next CEO for the organization. They are determined to ensure the selection of a leader who carries the same spirit of community engagement that has long characterized the United Way. Exciting times loom ahead for both the organization and the Knoxville community!
