If you’ve been following the basketball scene in Tennessee, then you know that the TSSAA Division II State Basketball Championships are currently underway at the Hooper Eblen Center on the beautiful campus of Tennessee Tech in Cookeville. Excitement is in the air as the tournament has narrowed down from an impressive 16 teams to just eight, showcasing some of the most talented young athletes in our state!

A Look at the Teams

Basketball enthusiasts will be excited to know that four teams from the Nashville area are stepping up to represent in several thrilling matches. These teams are:

  • Webb School – Bell Buckle (DII-A)
  • Christ Presbyterian Academy (CPA) (DII-AA)
  • Providence Christian (DII-A)
  • Briarcrest Christian Academy (BGA) (DII-A)

Knoxville isn’t lagging behind either, with a solid lineup consisting of:

  • Knoxville Webb’s boys team and the girls’ team (both in DII-AA)
  • The King’s Academy girls team (DII-A)

And let’s not forget Memphis, which has underlined its presence with Briarcrest Christian as the sole representative from that area in the tournament.

Recent Highlights

In one of the tournament’s standout moments, the Knoxville Webb boys captivated fans by clinching the DII-AA state championship title with a nail-biting 54-45 victory over Briarcrest. This win is monumental, marking the first state championship for Knoxville Webb’s boys since 2019 and their second overall in the school’s history. Owen Lentz was an essential cog in this thrilling matchup, leading the scoring with 14 points. He was closely followed by teammates Came Swearengen and Alex Leeth, who contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. The final quarter was packed with adrenaline as Knoxville Webb surged ahead, having started the quarter trailing at 36-32.

But the glory didn’t stop there for Knoxville Webb. The girls’ team also found victory, triumphing in a DII-AA state championship against CPA with a final score of 59-41. Zahnyah Rockett led the charge with an impressive 20 points, while Meeyah Green supported her with 19 points and 5 assists. It’s worth mentioning that CPA had to push through the second half without their star guard, Lily Morrow, due to a leg injury.

Title Game Recaps

The King’s Academy reached new heights, making it to the DII-A title game but faced off against Webb School – Bell Buckle. Despite Skylar Walden shining brightly with 20 points, the team ultimately fell short.

In another thrilling spectacle, Dasha Biriuk, an Ohio State signee, led Webb to victory, scoring an outstanding 26 points and snagging 10 rebounds, encapsulating the essence of teamwork and individual skill as they claimed their fourth state title in five years.

Meanwhile, Providence Christian Academy (PCA) celebrated their own championship victory in the DII-A boys division, overcoming Battle Ground Academy with a scene-stealing 78-68 score. Aiden Bolden dropped 20 points in this match, proving to be a crucial player on the court.
