Theatre Knoxville Downtown Launches Engaging Production of ‘The Revolutionists’

Theatre Knoxville Downtown Presents ‘The Revolutionists’

Knoxville, TN – Theatre Knoxville Downtown kicked off a new play, The Revolutionists, showcasing a mix of humor and emotion that grips the audience right from the start. Directed by Courtney Woolard, this production brings to life Lauren Gunderson’s 2018 play, which dives into the chaotic world of 18th century France during the Reign of Terror.

A Blend of History and Humor

The play captures a time when the threat of the guillotine loomed large, and anyone could face dire consequences for merely questioning the new revolutionary government. The stage is set in Paris in 1793, where we meet four remarkable female characters, inspired by real-life figures from that era. The director worked closely with Saralee Peccolo-Taylor, a Dramaturge and French professor at Pellissippi State Community College, to create a captivating production that melds historical drama with sharp wit and emotional depth.

Our Main Characters

At the heart of the story are four strong women: Olympe de Gouges, a talented playwright experiencing writers’ block; Marianne Angelle, a determined abolitionist; Charlotte Corday, a revolutionary figure; and Marie Antoinette, the notorious queen facing her downfall. Each of them seeks the help of Olympe to navigate their turbulent lives and to assert their voices in a time when women’s rights were often overlooked.

Francesca Reggio takes on the role of Olympe, who struggles to find her voice amid the chaos. Joyce Jones portrays Marianne, a fierce advocate for both abolition and women’s rights. Angel Orenstein embodies Charlotte, who strives to be remembered beyond her romantic ties, while Rebecca Gomez presents a nuanced portrayal of Marie Antoinette, revealing her complexity beyond the frivolous reputation she holds.

The Emotional Journey

The performance is described as an emotional rollercoaster, deftly oscillating between moments of laughter and deep reflection. The four women bond over shared experiences as they fight for liberty, equality, and their right to be heard—what the play refers to as Liberté, Égalité, Sororité. The playwright’s clever use of metatheatrical elements brings forth thoughts on the power of storytelling while encouraging the audience to consider their roles in social justice.

Production Elements

Under the guidance of Stage Manager Zoe Zurgensen and Technical Director Joseph Johnson, the production remains engaging and easy to follow, even with its experimental nature. Johnson’s clever lighting choices enhance the set changes seamlessly, and Zurgensen skillfully maintains the pace of the performance. Costumes designed by Angel Orenstein not only capture the time period but also reflect the individuality of each character.

Final Thoughts

With a recurring a cappella revolutionary ballad led by Music Director Casey Maxwell, the show aims to resonate deeply with viewers. The cast’s performances are complemented by lively and striking visuals that pay tribute to the revolutionary spirit of the time.

Audiences are encouraged to experience The Revolutionists, which runs at Theatre Knoxville Downtown until September 22, 2024. Shows take place Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 PM, with Sunday matinees at 3 PM. Tickets are available for purchase online or at the box office.

This play serves as a powerful reminder of women’s strength and the importance of standing up for one’s beliefs during challenging times. So, gather your friends and family for an enlightening evening filled with history, laughter, and powerful messages!
