Knoxville, Tenn. — The Tennessee Theatre, a cherished landmark in downtown Knoxville, is reaching out to the community for support in funding its exciting new project, the 612 Building expansion. This initiative, which has been in the works for some time, aims to enhance the theatre’s facilities by connecting the historic venue to the adjacent 612 Building. This connection will not only upgrade the restrooms and concessions but also add valuable space for events.
The 612 Building, which was formerly home to the Mechanics’ Bank and Trust, is being renovated to provide nearly 20,000 additional square feet of functional space. This new area is set to foster various opportunities for education, outreach, and partnerships, ultimately allowing the Tennessee Theatre to better serve its community. Planning for this project began in earnest over five years ago, and the Tennessee Theatre Foundation has already raised $17 million of its $19 million financial goal.
Construction kicked off in April, and local firms Jenkins & Stiles and Partners Development, along with architect McCarty Holsaple McCarty, are leading the renovation efforts. The project is shaping up to be a remarkable transformation, with completion expected by fall 2025.
Becky Hancock, the Executive Director of the Tennessee Theatre, is enthusiastic about this project. “To everyone who has cherished memories here, I invite you to support our 612-expansion campaign,” she said. “Every dollar gets us closer to our goal. Just as the renovations in 2005 revitalized this historic venue, the upcoming expansion will secure a vibrant future for the Tennessee Theatre.”
Hancock also mentioned that they’re eager to show the community how this renovation will not only breathe life into the 612 Building but will also enhance an integral part of Knoxville’s cultural landscape.
This expansion is particularly exciting because it addresses a key need for more amenities at the Tennessee Theatre. Attendees have often expressed their desire for improved restroom facilities and increased concession options. Additionally, the new space will help accommodate the rehearsal needs of touring Broadway shows, which the theatre has struggled to meet due to its busy calendar.
The theatre is committed to ensuring that ticket prices remain unchanged, so visitors can continue enjoying performances without added expenses. The expansion is designed to address “virtually all of the challenges experienced” by the theatre, allowing it to cater more effectively to audiences from across the region.
The Tennessee Theatre is encouraging community members to donate to the campaign. Every contribution, big or small, is appreciated and moves them one step closer to their $19 million goal. This project is more than just a renovation; it’s about investing in the cultural fabric of Knoxville and ensuring that the Tennessee Theatre continues to be a beloved destination for years to come.
