Exciting Changes Coming to Knoxville’s Sunsphere with New Welcome Center Unveiling on November 20

Exciting Changes Coming to the Sunsphere in Knoxville!

Knoxville is buzzing with anticipation as the iconic Sunsphere prepares to unveil its brand-new welcome center, just in time for Thanksgiving! Mark your calendars for November 20, when locals and visitors alike will get to experience the enhanced offerings of this beloved landmark.

What’s New?

As part of the grand reopening, there will also be a new ticket price to soak in the spectacular views from the observation deck. Starting November 20, tickets will be priced at $10 for adults, which is double the previous $5 rate. But don’t fret too much; there will still be plenty of opportunities for Knox County residents to visit for free throughout the year. Designated free days will be announced at sunspheretickets.com, giving locals a chance to enjoy this unique attraction.

Investing in the Future

The increased ticket price will contribute to the Sunsphere Fund, responsible for funding the renovations, including the exciting new welcome center. According to Visit Knoxville, the renovations represent a heartfelt investment in this iconic structure, which has become synonymous with the city since it debuted during the 1982 World’s Fair.

What to Expect

The new welcome center will feature an expanded retail space, allowing visitors to browse before heading up to the observation deck. You can expect stunning panoramic views of World’s Fair Park from the third-floor level of the Sunsphere. The revamped space is a nod to the original design of the Sunsphere, with a charming touch of nostalgia that reflects on the city’s rich history.

Join us for the ribbon-cutting ceremony on November 20 at 10 a.m. It’s not just a celebration of the welcome center; there will also be a special appearance from the famous Budweiser Clydesdales from 9-11 a.m., providing an adorable photo opportunity. Plus, you can enjoy a warm cup of coffee from Travelin’ Tom’s Coffee Truck and complimentary Sunsphere cookies to sweeten the day!

A Word from the City

Knoxville’s Mayor, Indya Kincannon, expressed her excitement about the renovations, stating, “I am so excited to share these renovations with all of Knoxville and the thousands of visitors who come here every year.” Meanwhile, Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs emphasized that the Sunsphere plays a pivotal role in showcasing the beauty and allure of Knox County to visitors.

Upcoming Temporary Closures

Before the reopening, the observation deck will be closed for final renovations from November 4 to November 19. After that, everything will be polished and set for the grand reveal! Guests will now enter the Sunsphere directly from the expanded welcome center instead of from the base level of World’s Fair Park.

More Than Just Sightseeing

“Classic Blue”, which pays homage to the Sunsphere’s heritage. The Rubik’s Cube-inspired decor and entrance canopy topped with a solar panel reflect the 1982 theme “Energy Turns the World” as well and are part of Knoxville’s identity.

Visiting Information

New entrance fees are now set: $10 for adults, $5 for kids aged 12 and under, and a $1 discount for veterans with proper ID. Options for group rates, private tours, and field trips are also available by calling 865-314-0660 if you’re planning a bigger outing.

It’s a thrilling time for Knoxville as the city looks forward to this revitalized treasure. Make sure to visit the Sunsphere and enjoy everything it has to offer!
