If you’re looking for a delightful way to enjoy the great outdoors while also sparking the imagination, then the Storybook Trails near Greeneville are just for you! A few years ago, a couple discovered these enchanting trails at Davy Crockett Birthplace State Park, and they were instantly hooked. Along these trails, you’ll find pages from charming children’s books waiting for you as you wander through some of the most beautiful scenery Tennessee has to offer.
Now, we have to mention that this particular park is still closed due to the recent flooding of the Nolichucky River, which caused a significant amount of damage. But don’t let that stop you from exploring other wonderful parks nearby. The storybook adventure continues at various state parks across Tennessee!
Just recently, the eagerly anticipated Norris Dam State Park Storybook Trail reopened its doors after a year’s worth of planning. This trail features the delightful book “Oliver’s Trail” written by Kit Chase. Starting at the ranger’s station located on the east side of the dam, this trail meanders along the mesmerizing banks of the lake. As you explore, you’ll find chapters from the book posted at intervals, creating a perfect combination of reading and hiking!
Parking is available right at the small office, and don’t worry—there are public bathrooms and a fantastic overlook to enjoy the stunning views of the historic dam. If you’re considering an overnight stay, you’re in luck! Cabin rentals and camping spots are conveniently located just uphill from the parking area, not to mention a newer camping area that boasts full hookups and ample space for tents or RVs. Plus, if you’re up for a little further adventure, head over to the east end of the dam where you’ll discover a picturesque hiking trail along the Clinch River.
While you’re at Norris Dam State Park, don’t forget to check out the free Lenoir Museum. It features seasonal programs, one of which includes an exciting workshop on traditional beeswax pillar candle making happening on Friday, November 23rd, at 11 a.m. The cost is only $12 per person, making it a unique experience that you definitely shouldn’t miss!
The great thing about these Storybook Trails is not just the reading; it’s about creating memorable experiences with your family or friends. The state of Tennessee started this wonderful initiative back in 2016 at Long Hunter State Park, and it has blossomed into an incredible program with more than two dozen parks now featuring their own Storybook Trails! Other nearby parks with these charming trails include Pickett State Park near Jamestown, Cove Lake State Park near Caryville, Cumberland Mountain State Park near Crossville, and Frozen Head State Park near Wartburg. If you’re a fan of reading while enjoying nature, then these trails are an absolute must-see!
So, what are you waiting for? Plan your next trip to one of the gorgeous state parks that offer Storybook Trails! And hey, if you’re heading to Norris Dam, why not take a scenic drive back to Knoxville via the road across the dam? While you’re there, don’t miss the chance to stop by the Coal Creek Miners Museum—it’s a fascinating spot that will surely round out your perfect day of exploration. Immerse yourself in the joys of reading while embracing the breathtaking landscapes throughout Greeneville and beyond.
