Smith County 4-H Members Excel at Tennessee State Fair with Awards and Community Engagement

Smith County 4-Hers Shine at Tennessee State Fair Events

Smith County, TN – The Tennessee State Fair recently provided an exciting ending to summer for local youth involved in 4-H programs. With fair food, activities, and competitions galore, Smith County 4-H’ers made their presence felt during this year’s events held in neighboring Wilson County. The festivities kicked off with the annual Tennessee 4-H Picnic at the Fair on August 16, bringing together supporters, volunteers, and 4-H members.

A Picnic for a Purpose

The 4-H Picnic at the Fair serves as a significant fundraising event for scholarships for 4-H Camp and educational conferences across Tennessee. This summer, two 4-H members from Smith County benefited from half-scholarships awarded due to the proceeds from the previous picnic. These scholarships allowed youngsters from all 95 counties in Tennessee to participate in summer camps.

Among the highlights of the picnic was the opportunity for Smith County’s own Gabe Harville, this year’s 4-H State Council President, to speak alongside Bob Kesling, the popular “Voice of the Vols.” Both captivated the audience, representing the spirit of 4-H well. Gabe also showcased his talent by donating an original piece of artwork for the live auction, which sold for an impressive $350!

Sweet Success

Another notable contribution came from Jennifer Wright, who gained recognition after winning the 2023 Tennessee State Fair Apple Pie Contest. Her award-winning pie fetched an astounding $2,600 in the live auction. “That definitely deserves a blue ribbon!” remarked one of the local fair-goers.

Open Livestock Judging Contest

The excitement continued for Smith County 4-H’ers at the Open Livestock Judging Contest, which took place on August 19. Thirteen Smith County participants joined nearly 500 youth from across the state to judge various livestock classes, including doe kids and lambs. Highlights included

  • McCall Kemp winning 1st Place High Individual in the Junior Division.
  • The Junior team, comprised of Gracie Driver, McCall Kemp, Josie Harville, and Scarlett Hicks, placed 2nd overall in their division.
  • Scarlett Hicks also earned a personal accolade placing 7th individually.
  • The Junior High team, including Kara Brooks, Bryant Locke, Emma Locke, and Marshall Taylor, secured 5th overall.

Engaging Communities

Another group of Smith County 4-H’ers had the opportunity to engage with fairgoers on August 23. Easton Bibbings, Emmy Bibbings, Gabe Harville, and Kynlee Davis took on the important role of educating attendees about sun safety, hydration, and healthy snacks, promoting an active and healthy lifestyle.

Gratitude to Volunteers

The success of these events can be attributed to the hard work of numerous volunteers and organizers, who dedicate their time to ensuring the fair is a memorable experience for everyone involved. “Thanks to all the dedicated individuals who make the Tennessee State Fair possible year after year!” expressed a local event organizer.
