Sevierville Celebrates a Legal Legend: Judge Norma Ogle’s Portrait Unveiled

SEVIERVILLE — It was a momentous day in Sevierville as the community came together to celebrate the incredible career and achievements of Judge Norma Ogle. The retired Court of Criminal Appeals judge was the guest of honor at a ceremony held at the Sevier County Courthouse, where a beautiful new portrait of her was unveiled. Family, friends, and colleagues gathered to pay tribute to this trailblazer who broke barriers and set an inspiring example for many.

A Trailblazer in Law

Judge Ogle’s contributions to the legal field are truly remarkable. Not only was she the first woman to practice law at the Sevier County Courthouse, but she was also appointed by the governor as the only female member of the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals. Gary Wade, the retired Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court, was present at the event and shared fond memories, stating, “She broke a barrier. All of us were so proud of her many, many accomplishments.”

A Heartwarming Ceremony

The portrait was unveiled by none other than Judge Ogle’s husband, Circuit Court Judge Rex Henry Ogle, and her lovely granddaughter, Georgia. The atmosphere buzzed with emotion as friends and colleagues reflected on the profound impact Ogle had on their lives and careers. A beautifully decorated cake was served to honor her, symbolizing how her peers trusted her expertise and often turned to her for guidance.

A Role Model for Women in Law

As the president of the Sevier County Bar Association, Katie Jones spoke of the inspiration Judge Ogle provided to younger female attorneys. She said, “As a young female attorney, I really look up to Norma. She really broke through a lot of glass ceilings for all of us who look after her.” These heartfelt words resonate with many who have walked the path Ogle paved for women in law.

A Personal Journey

Originally hailing from Loretta, Tennessee, Ogle moved to Sevier County in 1979 while she was eight months pregnant. She faced her fears and apprehensions bravely, starting her law career in a place where she felt there were no other women lawyers. “I could just imagine sitting over there in that law office and waiting for a client to show up or have someone walk in and say ‘I don’t want to see a woman.’ But that never happened,” she reminisced.

A Legacy of Community Service

Once settled in Sevierville, Ogle did more than just practice law; she became a beloved member of the community. She served on the Sevier County Board of Education for 12 years and engaged in numerous community activities. Her husband, Rex, stood by her side throughout, proudly supporting her achievements. They have now been married for 47 years, demonstrating a partnership built on love and mutual respect.

A Message of Inspiration

Judge Ogle expressed her hopes for the future, particularly for young girls who aspire to be anything they want. “I want every little girl to see she can be anything she wants to be,” she declared. Her portrait, now hanging in the courthouse, will serve as a reminder of her journey and the doors she opened for future generations.

Looking Back with Gratitude

Ogle fondly recalled the many mentors and community members who helped her throughout her career, saying, “I want this day to be about Sevier County and the people who made my career and made me feel like I was one of them.” It’s clear that her heart is as big as her accomplishments, and Sevierville is indeed fortunate to call her one of their own.

As we reflect on Judge Ogle’s achievements and the legacy she leaves behind, it becomes evident that her story is one of determination, affection, and an unwavering belief in equality. Here’s to Judge Norma Ogle—a true inspiration for us all!
