Sponsor Our ArticlesSouth Knoxville is poised for significant change with the upcoming $19.2 million Sevier Avenue Streetscapes Project set to begin on January 20. Over the next 18 months, the initiative, led by Whaley Construction and Southern Constructors Inc., will enhance the streetscape with features like ADA-compliant sidewalks, new streetlights, traffic signals, and a roundabout to improve traffic flow. As local businesses brace for impact, many anticipate increased foot traffic and community engagement through special events during construction.
Get ready, South Knoxville! Big changes are on the way thanks to the upcoming Sevier Avenue Streetscapes Project. This engaging initiative is set to kick off on January 20 and will involve two dedicated contractors, Whaley Construction and Southern Constructors Inc. Over the next 18 months, both contractors will work hand-in-hand to give Sevier Avenue a much-needed makeover, wrapping up the project by mid-2026.
With a generous investment of $19.2 million backing the project, residents can look forward to a whole new feel for the area. The streetscape revamp aims to foster a friendly atmosphere by featuring wide, ADA-compliant sidewalks, making sure everyone can enjoy the local vibe safely. Anyone who has ever navigated Sevier Avenue knows how important such upgrades are to creating a welcoming community space.
This project isn’t just about better sidewalks. A new railroad crossing will be added, while shiny, new streetlights and traffic signals will illuminate the area. Plus, there’s going to be a new roundabout at the intersection of Sevier Avenue, Foggy Bottom Street, and Island Home Avenue—an essential addition for keeping the traffic flowing smoothly.
Can you imagine the area without overhead utility lines? Well, that’s about to change! Those utility lines will now be tucked away underground, resulting in a cleaner, more polished aesthetic. That transformation is in sync with the broader vision outlined in the 2006 South Waterfront Vision Plan, aiming to reconnect communities that the Tennessee River has divided for far too long.
The city is committed to making sure traffic access to local businesses, including the nearby South Knoxville Elementary School, remains seamless throughout the construction phase. General traffic will continue as usual, with two lanes open at all times and flaggers directing motorists to ensure safety and flow.
In recent years, Sevier Avenue has come alive with a mix of bustling restaurants, trendy breweries, charming shops, and more. It’s a delightful shift away from a previously “faded” commercial corridor, and now the community is buzzing with excitement for the future enhancements. Local officials are encouraging engagement, making sure residents and business owners have a voice. A public meeting has already been held, allowing everyone to ask questions and gain clarity on the plans.
While some local merchants have raised concerns about the impact of construction on their businesses, many share a hopeful outlook for the long run. The improvements could bring in more foot traffic and boost visibility for their shops. To keep that local spirit alive, the city plans to support these businesses through special events and marketing campaigns during construction.
As the construction unfolds bit by bit, the city has taken care to minimize disruption, especially during school times. The first part of the work will kick off at the eastern end of Sevier Avenue and will progress toward the more developed areas. Shoppers, diners, and families can expect improvements to drainage, parking spaces, and pedestrian-friendly biking infrastructure throughout the project.
While change can often bring challenges, community sentiment is definitely leaning towards excitement about the upcoming improvements. With the Sevier Avenue Streetscapes Project just around the corner, South Knoxville is poised to become an even more vibrant, connected, and beautiful place to live, work, and play. So, hold on tight because in just a few days, we’re about to start a new chapter on Sevier Avenue!
