KNOXVILLE — Terrifying Road Trip Experience

This past Saturday evening, two friends experienced a shocking and frightening moment while driving through London, Kentucky, on their way to Knoxville. The incident involved multiple gunshots being fired along Interstate 75, turning what should have been a simple road trip into a nightmare.

Gunfire Erupts on the Interstate

According to reports from the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the scene of a gunshot victim along I-75 at exit 49 around 5:30 PM. In total, nine vehicles were hit by gunfire, and five individuals suffered injuries as a result of the shooting.

One of the friends, Christina DiNoto, who was driving, vividly recalled the frightening moment. “All of the sudden we heard like a loud – it sounded like an explosion,” DiNoto explained. “It was so loud we both jumped.” During their drive, they initially thought they had heard a rock hitting the car. “I turned around, checked it out, and then the car next to us started to slow down and pull over,” she added. Her friend Jeremy then questioned, “was that a gunshot?”

Witnessing Chaos Unfold

Shortly after the sound, DiNoto and her friend noticed a flurry of police cars and ambulances hurriedly making their way toward the site of the incident. “I would have never in a million years thought that there would be an active shooter on the highway,” she remarked. “That sounds like something out of a movie.”

Upon their arrival back in Knoxville, DiNoto took a moment to survey the damage to her vehicle. “On my metal rim, I have, like, really aggressive off-roading tires, and there’s a huge divot in my rim. Like, I can put my index finger in it,” she described. Additionally, she found scratches on her rear quarter panel, likely caused by bullets ricocheting off the car.

Gratitude Amidst the Chaos

Despite the significant damage to her truck, DiNoto expressed her relief at not being harmed during the ordeal. “I was just on a casual road trip, and you would never think anything like that would happen,” she said. The scary experience made her think about the dangers of everyday activities in today’s world. “It really puts in perspective what a scary world we’re living in now, you know? You can’t even go about doing normal things without the threat of violence, unfortunately.”

Law Enforcement Investigating

The Laurel County Sheriff’s Office has identified a suspect in the case. They are looking for 32-year-old Joseph A. Couch, who is described as 5’10” tall and weighing approximately 154 pounds. Authorities have warned that Couch is considered to be armed and dangerous, urging anyone who might spot him to avoid direct contact and call for help instead. People with any information regarding his whereabouts are encouraged to reach out to the London-Laurel County 911 center by dialing 911 or (606) 878-7000.

The aftermath of this distressing event serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the realities of safety on the road. As the investigation continues, residents and travelers alike are left grappling with the troubling question: how can such violence occur in everyday settings?
