COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State Dominates Tennessee in College Football Playoff Opener

Ohio State University showcased a remarkable performance on Saturday, defeating the University of Tennessee with a commanding score of 42-17. This decisive victory took place at Ohio State’s home field and was part of the highly anticipated College Football Playoff. The Buckeyes’ win sets the stage for a rematch against Oregon in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day.

The Game Overview

From the moment the game kicked off, Ohio State established its dominance. The Buckeyes opened the scoring with a 37-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Jeremiah Smith on their first drive. Following this energetic start, linebacker Cody Simon delivered a massive hit on Tennessee quarterback Nico Iamaleava, which unfortunately left Iamaleava with a damaged helmet. Ohio State quickly jumped to a three-touchdown lead within the first quarter, leaving no room for Tennessee to mount a comeback.

Significance of the Win

This victory not only marked Ohio State’s first win over an SEC opponent under head coach Ryan Day, but it also reflected a strong response from the team after a disappointing loss to Michigan three weeks earlier. Coach Day expressed pride in his team’s reaction, stating, “Proud of the way they responded. You could tell from the jump they had a look in their eye that they were going to win this game.” Notably, with this win, Ohio State recorded its largest margin of victory against an SEC team, surpassing a previous record that dated back 91 years.

Player Highlights

Quarterback Will Howard rebounded impressively after facing criticism following the loss to Michigan. During this playoff game, he completed 24 of 29 passes for a total of 311 yards, throwing two touchdown passes and also rushing for 37 yards. While reflecting on his performance, Howard remarked, “We did a hell of a job not letting off the gas.” The Buckeyes, maintaining their momentum, allowed Howard to sit out for most of the fourth quarter.

Jeremiah Smith was another standout player, finishing the game with 103 yards and two touchdowns on just six receptions, showcasing his exceptional skills on the field. As Howard noted, “He’s the best receiver in the country.” Running back TreVeyon Henderson also contributed significantly, with 80 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Defensive Mastery

Ohio State’s defense played a crucial role in the victory, preventing Iamaleava from completing any passes until the second quarter, by which time the Buckeyes held a commanding lead of 21-0. Coach Day appreciated his team’s pride and response, stating, “These guys have a lot of pride. I think this said a lot about who our guys are to be able to respond like that in a big way.”

Looking Ahead

The Buckeyes now turn their attention to a rematch with the Oregon Ducks, who defeated them earlier this season by a narrow margin of 32-31. This upcoming matchup has created enthusiasm among the players, especially as Howard expressed his eagerness: “It’s going to be a heck of an opportunity for all of us.” The Buckeyes, now favored by one point, will aim to avenge their earlier defeat.

As the countdown to the Rose Bowl begins, all eyes will be on Ohio State as they prepare to reclaim their standing against Oregon and continue their pursuit of a national championship.
