This stunning piece of art doesn’t just beautify the landscape; it serves as a heartfelt tribute to the late Vernon Kyle Hale Jr., a beloved figure in the community who dedicated his life to agriculture, education, and making the world a better place.
Vernon “Kyle” Hale Jr. was a proud alumnus of the University of Tennessee (Knoxville ‘81) and took his education in animal science to heart as he returned to help manage the family farm. Sadly, the community lost this dedicated farmer in December 2023. His wife, Kay Hale, who also graduated from UT Knoxville in public health, warmly recalls their time at the university and all the ways they kept it close to their hearts.
“What Kyle learned at UT impacted how he worked here on the farm, but also how he helped others,” said Kay, sharing delightful memories of the countless field trips they hosted for local schools. “We came back to our community and shared what we learned with lots of other people.”
The couple was not only active in farming but also took a hands-on approach in their community. They collaborated closely with UT Extension, participating in 4-H events, serving on state extension committees, and helping to kick off the youth dairy show in Hamblen County. Kyle was involved in many local boards and organizations, including the Hamblen County Planning Commission and Dairy Farmers of America. His passing left a substantial void in the community.
In a touching gesture to honor her husband, Kay reached out to Hamblen County Extension Agent Mannie Bedwell with an idea that emerged after a tragic fire destroyed the county’s first UT mural, a piece they had long admired. “We jumped on it,” Kay said, her heart brimming with emotions. “Even though my husband has passed away, I know this is something he wanted desperately.”
The Hale family boasts deep roots with the University of Tennessee, stretching across three generations. Kyle’s father, Vernon Kyle Hale Sr., though unable to attend UT due to family obligations, was a steadfast supporter of the university along with his wife, Annis Hale (Knoxville ‘42). Their dedication to UT was a cornerstone of the family, influencing all four of their sons—Tom, Sam, Steve, and Kyle, all proud alumni of UT Knoxville.
Kay’s family is no stranger to the university either. Her father, Dr. Oscar McCallum (Knoxville ’51, UTHSC ’52), co-founded the UT Family Practice Center, ensuring the family’s commitment to education and community service continued through generations.
Hopefulness hangs around this mural. It’s not just an image painted on the barn walls; it represents the unwavering spirit of education and community involvement in Tennessee. Agent Mannie Bedwell emphasizes that this mural is a reminder that “the whole state of Tennessee is UT’s classroom.”
Situated prominently on Fish Hatchery Road, Solitude Farm sees about 2,828 passersby daily, guaranteeing that locals and visitors will get a glimpse of this heartfelt tribute. The mural, crafted by the talented Troy Freeman of Free Sky Studios, represents the 56th county mural in the Everywhere You Look, UT campaign, which aims to cover all 95 Tennessee counties by 2030. Since its inception in 2018, this initiative has successfully brought 62 murals to life.
Whether you’re a local or just passing through, this mural invites everyone to learn about the profound impact of the University of Tennessee and its commitment to community services. Kay hopes it sparks inspiration for anyone thinking about continuing or starting their college education. “I would love it if this mural spurred someone to go to school to start or finish their college education,” she expressed passionately.
So next time you’re in the area, be sure to stop by Solitude Farm, check out the new mural, and take a moment to reflect on the lasting legacy of Kyle Hale Jr. and the rich educational heritage of the University of Tennessee. Who knows? It might just inspire you!
