Knoxville Gears Up for a Special Day Honoring Heroes
Knoxville, get ready for a heartwarming occasion this coming Friday, September 20, 2024, as the city will play host to a significant observance of National POW/MIA Day. The event, organized by the Captain Bill Robinson Chapter of Vietnam Veterans of America, is set to take place at the beautiful East Tennessee Veterans Memorial, located in the picturesque Worlds Fair Park right in downtown Knoxville.
A Warm Welcome Awaits
Starting off the day, attendees are invited to join in for some free coffee and delicious biscuits, served at 9:00 a.m. What could be better than a warm beverage and a snack to kick-off a day of tribute? It’s a perfect opportunity to gather in a friendly environment and connect with fellow community members who share a common respect for our nation’s heroes.
Remembering Our POWs and MIAs
The ceremony itself will begin at 10:00 a.m., where we will honor those who were prisoners of war and those who remain missing in action. It’s essential to take a moment out of our busy lives to remember the sacrifices that many brave men and women have made for our country.
A Special Speaker
This year’s featured speaker is none other than Captain Bill Robinson, a retired USAF officer who holds the distinction of being the longest-held enlisted POW in the history of our nation. His story and experiences are bound to resonate deeply with everyone present, emphasizing the importance of never forgetting those who suffered in silence.
Saluting Our Veterans
Adding to the ceremony’s impact, the colors will be presented by the Anchor Division of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets Corps. These young cadets play an essential role in honoring our veterans and showcasing the next generation’s commitment to remembering their sacrifices. The sense of pride and honor will surely be palpable as they take part in this solemn event.
A Heartfelt Tribute
One of the highlights of the observance will be the Missing Man Table Ceremony, presented by the dedicated members of the Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard. This poignant tribute is a powerful reminder of those who are not with us and will touch the hearts of everyone in attendance. The ceremony will conclude with a rifle volley and the playing of Taps, a classic military honor that resonates feelings of respect and remembrance.
Everyone’s Invited!
The best part? The event is open to the public! Whether you’re a veteran, a family member of someone who served, or simply want to show your support, everyone is welcome to participate. It’s an excellent chance to unite as a community, reflect on our shared heritage, and pay homage to the sacrifices made by our service members.
