Knoxville Gears Up for Annual NAMI Walks on September 21

Knoxville is inviting everyone to participate in the upcoming NAMI Walks event on September 21. This annual event aims to raise awareness and funds for the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), focusing on eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health issues. The walk offers an opportunity for community members to show their support for those dealing with mental illness while enjoying a day filled with activities.

Join the Fun at Victor Ashe Park

The event kicks off at 9 a.m. at Victor Ashe Park, located at 4901 Bradshaw Road in Knoxville. Participants have the option to run, walk, or simply cheer on the walkers.

According to Toni Stephenson, a volunteer with NAMI’s Oak Ridge affiliate, “Everyone is welcome to join us on Walk Day with or without a donation.” For those who wish to receive a beautiful NAMI T-shirt, a minimum donation or fundraising of $100 is required.

Purpose of the Walk

The main goal of the NAMI Walks is to raise awareness about mental health and help dispel common misconceptions. A prevalent myth is that people with mental illness are violent, but studies show that they are more likely to be victims of violence rather than perpetrators. “The No. 1 reason for the walk is to raise awareness and eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness,” Stephenson explained.

Community Support Needed

For the event to be successful, teams, donations, volunteers, and sponsors are needed. Community members interested in joining the walk or supporting the cause can sign up or donate by visiting the official NAMI Walks website. There are also specific options to donate to the Oak Ridge affiliate via the “NAMI Oak Ridge United in Hope” page or by contacting Rhonda Sternfels directly.

Activities and Engagement

Aside from the walk, attendees can engage in various fun activities during the event. There will be music, guest speakers, and face painting, making it a family-friendly environment. It’s a great chance to connect with like-minded individuals who are advocates for mental health awareness and to learn about the resources available for those struggling with mental health issues.

Mental Health Resources

During the event, members of NAMI will be available to share information about resources for those affected by mental illness. Many people may not realize that help is accessible, and NAMI aims to assure participants that “you are not alone” in this fight against mental health stigma.

Get Involved

Whether you decide to walk, volunteer, donate, or simply learn more about mental health issues in your community, your participation can make a difference. Mark your calendars for September 21, and come out to support a good cause while enjoying a vibrant day in Knoxville.

The NAMI Walks event is not just about raising funds; it’s about raising awareness and fostering a sense of community around mental health. Together, we can work towards a day when mental health issues are openly discussed, and stigma is a thing of the past.
