Knoxville’s Latino Community Shines Bright at Centro Hispano de East Tennessee’s Summer Camp
Knoxville, Tennessee, is buzzing with excitement as the local Latino community continues to grow and thrive. What’s particularly heartwarming is the popularity of the Centro Hispano de East Tennessee, which recently hosted a lively summer camp for kids this year. This event brought together children from diverse backgrounds to learn, play, and create lasting memories. Over the last few years, Knoxville has seen a remarkable shift, with the Hispanic population nearly doubling from 8,206 to 15,160. Latinos now represent 8% of the city’s residents, making their growth not just significant but also a vital part of Knoxville’s culture. While the increasing numbers are fantastic, they also bring challenges, especially regarding education. Recently, we learned that about 12% of the student population in Knox County Schools identifies as Latino. Unfortunately, this demographic often faces hurdles in accessing bilingual educational materials and support.
Claudia Caballero, the president of Centro Hispano, emphasizes the urgent need for improved educational resources for Hispanic students. She pointed out the striking disparity in graduation rates, with only 77.9% of Hispanic students graduating compared to an overall rate of 89.7% for the 2021-2022 academic year. Moreover, the postsecondary enrollment rates reveal a significant gap, with only 35% of Hispanic students pursuing further education after high school, a stark contrast to the 52.8% average enrollment for all students in Tennessee. This situation is a clear indicator that more support and resources are necessary to bridge the educational gap.
Cristo Hispano de East Tennessee is stepping up to fill these gaps and empower the local Latino community. The organization, which began almost two decades ago from humble beginnings, now stands as the leading organization serving Latinos in the area. With over 200 volunteers and thousands of instructional hours, the center has helped many families facing socio-economic challenges. Caballero shared, “Centro serves thousands of clients and continues to grow and adapt to the needs of our community.”
Cristina Cáceres, the vice president of community impact at Centro, also plays a significant role, focusing on improving the physical and mental well-being of Latino families. She expressed her passion for community service, inspired by her mother’s dedication to helping others. “My team works on health education, community resource navigation, and mental health support,” Cáceres explained. Her personal mission to heal and uplift resonates with many as it helps strengthen the bond within the community. “I love that I can be my authentic self here,” she added, underscoring the importance of belonging.
What’s great about Centro is that opportunities to support the Latino community extend beyond just the organization. They encourage volunteers to get involved, whether by sharing language skills or simply lending a helping hand. Caballero shared an experience that illustrates the beauty of growing together: “It’s been an invitation for me to grow and evolve alongside an organization and community that means so much to me.”
