Knoxville Symphony Orchestra Launches Season with Dynamic Mix of Classics and Contemporary Music

Knoxville Symphony Orchestra Kicks Off Season with Energetic Blend of Classics

This past weekend, the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra (KSO) treated music lovers to an exhilarating start to its season at the enchanting Tennessee Theatre. Maestro Aram Demirjian took a unique route this time, steering away from the typical lighter classics or obvious favorites. Instead, he skillfully combined two very different yet equally compelling works: George Gershwin’s Concerto in F and Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. To kick off the evening, he also introduced the audience to Kauyumari, an innovative piece by contemporary Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz.

A Journey Through Sound: Kauyumari

Kauyumari, which translates to “blue deer” in the Huichol language, opened the concert with serene and captivating sounds that mimicked the elements of nature—think thunder and rain, courtesy of the percussion section. This piece, which premiered in 2021 and was commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, invites listeners to embark on a “hallucinogenic journey.” It may have started quietly, but soon escalated into an energetic dance of rhythms reminiscent of Bolero, filled with a pulsating beat that grabbed everyone’s attention.

While some might argue that the structure lacked a definitive destination, many in the audience couldn’t help but vibe with the infectious energy. Demirjian and the orchestra truly showcased their rhythmic prowess, pulling off a performance that left everyone buzzing.

Gershwin’s Vibrant Take on American Classics

Next up was the much-anticipated Gershwin’s Concerto in F, featuring the talented pianist Natasha Paremski. Having previously performed with the KSO in 2019, she brought her illustrious flair back to the stage, embodying a style that balances bold, expressive dynamics with delicate subtleties. Every note she played sparkled with an unmistakable American essence.

What was a bit surprising, yet intriguing, was that Paremski used an iPad for her score during the performance. Regardless of the method, her interpretation was spot on. The audience got to soak up the jazzy and bluesy moments of the concerto, which came alive under her touch. The vibrant energy of the piece was complemented perfectly by a beautifully soulful trumpet solo from the KSO’s new Principal Trumpet, Kole Pantuso, adding another layer of depth to this unforgettable performance.

Beethoven’s Timeless Allure

If there was any doubt about what the audience came for, it melted away as the KSO launched into Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony. This piece is legendary, known for its iconic four-note motif. However, Demirjian’s direction steered clear of overemphasizing it. The focus was instead on the dynamic conversations between strings and winds that define Beethoven’s music. The orchestra excelled in these back-and-forth exchanges, with thrilling moments led by the poignant oboe solo from KSO Principal Claire Chenette.

In a delightful twist, Demirjian took the tempo of the second movement down a notch, offering a refreshing languor that highlighted the emotional depths of the symphony. The dynamics played a crucial role in building suspense, creating dramatic tension that kept the audience on the edge of their seats. As the Finale approached, it brilliantly evolved from the familiar motif, culminating in jubilant themes that beckoned a response from listeners.

A Warm Response

As the concert came to an end, it was clear that the audience was thoroughly enchanted. The joyful energy resonated through the theatre, with thunderous applause and cheers echoing throughout the space, a fitting homage to Beethoven’s enduring brilliance and a reflection of optimism for the season ahead.

With such a dynamic lineup and an engaging performance, it appears that the KSO is off to an exciting start, leaving everyone eagerly anticipating what else is in store for the new season!
