Knoxville Residents Evacuated Due to Suspicious Explosives Discovery

Knoxville, TN – A serene afternoon turned into a scene of caution and concern when a suspicious box containing rare explosives was discovered on October 10. Local residents and business owners near CMC Recycling on Mynderse Avenue were ordered to evacuate as authorities responded to a possible explosive threat.

The Discovery

At around 2:15 p.m. on that fateful day, employees at CMC Recycling stumbled across a 5-foot-by-5-foot steel box that was not only smoking but was suspected to contain dynamite. The Knoxville Police Department (KPD) was quick to mobilize, backed by the dedicated Knoxville Fire Department (KFD), to investigate this alarming find. “In my 26 years with the KFD, I’ve never witnessed anything like this,” said Assistant Chief Mark Wilbanks.

The urgency of the situation led to an evacuation of everything within a 3,000-foot radius of the discovery site, affecting over 1,200 residents. Western Avenue was blocked off, and emergency vehicles lined the streets as authorities worked to assess the situation.

The Evacuation Process

Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon reassured the public that while the evacuation was highly recommended, it wasn’t mandatory. Still, as a safety precaution, people were instructed to leave their homes and businesses as officials tried to ascertain the contents of the mysterious box.

By evening, the situation was still unresolved, and a shelter was set up at the Jacob Building in Chilhowee Park. More than 60 evacuees found refuge there, and the shelter was prepared to accommodate up to “a couple hundred” if it became necessary.

What Happens Next?

As anxiety rose among residents, the KPD prioritized safety, emphasizing that this was not a small amount of explosives. By midday on October 11, estimates suggested that the box might contain around 200 sticks of dynamite. This number raised flags because even a small quantity of explosives can lead to significant destruction. It’s astounding to think that a simple box could potentially house such a dangerous substance!

Emergency officials worked tirelessly, consulting with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to establish a safety protocol. Their conclusion? Treat the situation with utmost caution until more information becomes available.

Official Insights

Assistant Chief Wilbanks mentioned that the bomb squad typically deals with calls of this nature once a year or less. However, given the uncertainty surrounding the box’s age and condition, officials agreed that this was a unique scenario. “Until we believe otherwise, we’re going to treat it like it’s going to explode,” he said, really letting people know the seriousness of the situation.

The dynamite in the box, believed to consist of compounds like nitroglycerin, is known to deteriorate, especially if stored improperly. This adds to the complexity of handling the situation. Should the dynamite start to weep nitroglycerin, it becomes incredibly volatile and challenging to transport safely.

Community Response

Community leaders have been proactive, with vehicles roaming neighborhoods, reminding residents about the evacuation request using loudspeakers in both English and Spanish. Mayor Kincannon’s efforts to communicate the dangers highlighted the city’s commitment to safety.

Looking Ahead

As evacuations unfolded, inquiries were made concerning those who might have ignored the evacuation request. By this point, officials had yet to identify any foul play concerning the box’s presence at the recycling center. This scenario has prompted an outpouring of community concern and questions about safety.

As of now, Knoxville residents await clearer skies and a resolution to the explosive situation. With continuous updates from the authorities, people remain hopeful for a swift return to normalcy.

For now, the safety of the community takes center stage, and everyone stays alert as teams work diligently to ensure that the mystery of the box is properly unraveled. Fingers crossed, Knoxville!
