Knoxville, Tennessee, buzzed with excitement as the musical “Knoxville” made its debut at the Clarence Brown Theatre on September 6, 2024. This new production, inspired by the life of writer James Agee, attracted a full house and left the audience buzzing with appreciation.
More than just a musical, “Knoxville” tells the poignant story of Agee’s early years, beginning in the Fort Sanders area of Knoxville where he was born in 1909. The show dives into Agee’s life after a tragic event; his father passed away in a car accident when Agee was just six years old. This sad incident happens about one mile from the theatre, adding a personal touch to the performance.
The role of young James, known as Rufus Follet, was played wonderfully by Nick Barrington. His portrayal, filled with innocence and admiration for his father, shone brightly throughout the production. The opening song, “Knoxville“, displayed a playful relationship between Rufus and his father, while the heart-wrenching “Father to Son” captured the tender bond they shared.
A highlight of the evening was the powerful centerpiece, “The Lunchroom of the Night“, performed by the cast at the moment surrounding the tragic death of Rufus’ father. This song features new music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, creating an emotional atmosphere that resonated deeply with the audience.
Director Josh Rhodes paid homage to the late Frank Galati, who not only wrote the book for the musical but also played a pivotal role in its initial development in April 2022. Galati, known for his profound influence on theatre, sadly passed away in January 2023 at the age of 79. Rhodes described Galati as “one of the greats” and credited him for his talent with words.
At the forefront of bringing this musical to life is Roy Cockrum, a Powerball winner who decided to invest his winnings into promoting the performing arts. His foundation played a crucial role in funding the commissioning and world premiere of “Knoxville“, and he was present at the theatre, welcoming attendees with enthusiasm as they entered the lobby.
As for why to see the show, Director Rhodes stated, “You don’t read this novel; it sings to you.” This sentiment rings true, capturing the essence of Agee’s beautiful narrative that unfolds across the stage with the help of music. The show runs until September 22, and those who attend can expect to enjoy a strong, balanced cast and exceptional acoustic performance, making every word crystal clear.
In addition to Barrington, the cast includes several local talents like Shinnerrie Jackson, Laura Beth Wells, and others, merging Knoxville’s local theatre scene with professional performers. The seamless integration adds a unique charm to the production.
As the evening wrapped up, the audience was left with fond memories and hope for “Knoxville” to find a larger stage beyond its hometown. This musical, filled with emotion, local flair, and rich history, promises to stay with its viewers long after the final curtain falls.
For anyone interested in experiencing this remarkable show, tickets can be purchased for the remaining performances at the Clarence Brown Theatre. Be sure not to miss a chance to witness this beautiful musical journey!
