KNOXVILLE, TN — Man Sentenced to 40 Years for Strangling and Kidnapping

A Knoxville man has been sentenced to 40 years in prison after being convicted of strangling his girlfriend and unlawfully detaining her in his van. The conviction was confirmed by the Knox County District Attorney’s Office on August 29, 2024.

The defendant, Merv Conley Rodgers, faced serious charges, including especially aggravated kidnapping, domestic assault, and two counts of aggravated assault. The disturbing events leading to his conviction occurred on June 22, 2023, following a violent dispute that took place just before while the couple was arguing in the van where Rodgers lived.

Details of the Incident

According to prosecutors, the couple had been dating for just a few weeks when the altercation began. During the argument, Rodgers allegedly punched his girlfriend and choked her until she lost consciousness. When she regained awareness and attempted to leave, he grabbed her, forced her into the van, and struck her with a baseball bat. After this brutal act, he strangled her once again until she passed out.

Victim’s Escape and Police Involvement

The victim managed to escape the van after being held overnight. She fled to a nearby apartment complex, where she immediately contacted 911 for help. Meanwhile, officers from the Knoxville Police Department arrived on the scene and rescued her as Rodgers searched for her.

DA Charme Allen expressed gratitude towards the police for their quick response, saying, “The quick response by police saved this victim and led to the successful prosecution of this repeat, violent offender.”

History of Violence

According to court records, Merv Conley Rodgers has an extensive criminal background that dates back to 1981, involving crimes such as robbery, burglary, and aggravated assault. His violent history played a significant role in his sentencing, as it indicated a pattern of behavior that law enforcement officials take very seriously.
