Knoxville Man Sentenced for Meth Possession and Illegal Gun Purchase

Knoxville, Tenn. — A recent turned twist in the local news has residents buzzing. A 38-year-old man named Michel Harris has been sentenced to an astonishing 380 months in prison after pleading guilty to serious charges related to drug possession and illegal firearm purchases. It’s a wild story full of unexpected events that culminated in a significant fall from grace for Harris.

According to a release from the United States Department of Justice, Harris was caught in a sticky situation with nearly a kilogram of methamphetamine in his possession. That’s quite a bit of the illicit substance, and the authorities are certainly not taking it lightly. On top of that, Harris was also charged with possessing a gun as a convicted felon—a big no-no that adds more fuel to the fire.

From Gun Show to Jail Cell

The drama began at the RK Gun Show in Knoxville back in April 2022, where Harris reportedly purchased a firearm, along with hundreds of rounds of ammunition and various firearm accessories. The types of items he bought raised serious eyebrows, especially among law enforcement. His shopping list included upper receivers for AR-type rifles and drum magazines capable of holding a whopping 100, 60, or 50 rounds for different firearms. It’s safe to say that Harris was gearing up for something far from ordinary.

After leaving the gun show, Harris caught the attention of authorities who were keeping a watchful eye on him. It wasn’t long until he ran into trouble while he was stopped for a traffic violation at a gas station located off Clinton Highway. It was here that officers decided to conduct a search of his van. Unfortunately, what followed was a chaotic series of events that none of the individuals present could have anticipated.

Chase and Crash

During the search, things took a dangerous turn. As officers were working to detain him, Harris made a run for it, hopping into his van and accelerating onto Clinton Highway with an officer still inside the vehicle. Can you imagine the tension in that moment? The officer attempted to regain control of the situation but was unfortunately unable to do so. In a wild turn of events, the van crashed head-on into two oncoming vehicles. Thankfully, most people involved walked away without serious injuries. However, the officer inside the van wasn’t as fortunate, suffering a head wound and a badly broken arm. Despite that traumatic experience, the officer has since made a full recovery.

Teamwork Among Authorities

The investigation that led to these charges was a result of some serious teamwork. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives was the leading force behind uncovering Harris’s activities, with invaluable assistance from the local Knoxville Police Department and the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Their collaboration proved effective in bringing this case to light and ensuring that justice was served.

After serving his lengthy prison sentence, Harris will be under supervised release for 10 years. It’s a stern reminder that engaging in illicit activities has serious repercussions. While it’s alarming to think about the lessons that need to be learned through such incidents, it’s also a win for law enforcement and the community as a whole to see justice take its course.

Residents of Knoxville are left to ponder the risks that can arise from illegal activities and how teamwork among law enforcement can overcome such challenges. Stories like this serve as crucial reminders for us all. Be vigilant and make safe choices!
