Sponsor Our ArticlesKnoxville, TN – A tragic series of events unfolded early morning on August 17 when a driver lost his life in a crash on Interstate 40, and a passerby who stopped to offer assistance was struck and killed by an ambulance. This disturbing incident left the local community in disbelief and mourning.
The incident occurred around 5:30 a.m. on I-40 east, according to Knoxville police. Reports indicate that the initial crash involved two vehicles – one of which became disabled on the highway, while the other flipped and came to rest in the median.
The driver of the vehicle that was left on the highway was identified as Lee Boone, 76, from Virginia. Sadly, Boone was pronounced dead at the scene. The second driver, who had been driving the flipped vehicle, was hospitalized with serious injuries and has since faced charges for driving under the influence.
In the aftermath of the crash, a bystander, Juan Carlos Herrera Gomez, age 45 from Knoxville, stopped his vehicle to help those involved in the accident. While he was providing assistance, he was accidentally struck by an ambulance that was responding to the scene. The ambulance, operated by Priority Ambulance, was on its way to Cocke County from Knoxville and did not have a patient on board at the time.
According to police, the ambulance was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision with Gomez’s vehicle. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene as well, adding another layer of grief to an already heartbreaking situation.
The unexpected deaths have left the Knoxville community shaken. News of the accidents quickly spread, and locals took to social media to express their condolences and shock over the incidents. “It is just so sad — losing two people like this in one morning feels so unfair,” said a resident who wished to remain anonymous.
Many members of the community are mourning not only for the victims but also for their families who will have to cope with such an immeasurable loss. Efforts to coordinate support for families affected by this tragic event are underway, as friends and acquaintances come together during this difficult time.
Local authorities are reminding residents to prioritize safety on the roads. They have issued a warning about the dangers involved in stopping to assist after accidents. “While we appreciate the willingness to help, it is crucial to stay safe. Please stay in your vehicle and call emergency services instead,” stated a spokesperson from the Knoxville Police Department.
This incident is under investigation, and the police are working diligently to piece together the details and ensure that all necessary precautions are communicated to the public.
As Knoxville processes this heartbreaking tragedy, the community is coming together to support those who lost their lives and their families. The dual loss of a driver and a good Samaritan underscores the unpredictable nature of life on the roads and the importance of safety for all. The city hopes to prevent similar incidents in the future and is encouraging everyone to remain vigilant and alert while driving.
