New hotel construction reviving Walnut Avenue in Knoxville

News Summary

Knoxville is set to transform Walnut Avenue with the construction of a new hotel, set to inject life into the area. The project, rooted in local history connected to the Kern family, aims to enhance community engagement and attract visitors, making Walnut Avenue a notable destination alongside Market Square.

Exciting Times Ahead for Knoxville’s Walnut Avenue!

Knoxville is set to spruce up its Walnut Avenue, a stretch often overlooked compared to the bustling Market Square nearby. Currently, Walnut Avenue sits between Summit Hill Drive and Union Avenue, but that’s about to change as plans for a vibrant hotel construction bring new life to this area.

New Hotel on the Horizon

At the heart of this revitalization is the planned hotel to be constructed in a parking lot area behind the Daylight Building. This new addition is considered to be a game-changer, expected to liven up Walnut Avenue and attract visitors. Much of this construction seems to be a nod towards Knoxville’s rich history, specifically the site’s ties to the esteemed Kern family.

A Peek into History

Before it became a parking lot, this very location was once home to Peter and Henrietta Kern, a pair of German immigrants who fled political strife in Europe during the late 1840s. They arrived in Knoxville during the Civil War, marrying here in 1864, and quickly made a name for themselves within the community. Although they thought their stay would be temporary, the Kerns eventually put down roots, with Peter becoming a well-known baker in the area.

Sadly, Henrietta Kern passed away just a week before Christmas in 1900, leaving behind a legacy that endures to this day. Their family had 11 children and lived near the old Knoxville Girls High School, which opened back in 1886 and is now celebrated as a historical landmark.

Kerns and Their Legacy

The Kern name lives on across Knoxville, noted in several landmarks such as the Kern Building, which houses popular spots like Tupelo Honey and the Oliver Hotel, and even the Peter Kern Library, a whimsical speakeasy. Not to mention, Kern’s Bakery food hall on Chapman Highway keeps the family spirit alive.

Life on Walnut Avenue in the Old Days

Let’s travel back a bit further. Historical images from the 1920s capture life in this area. There was once a bustling laundry shop run by George Loo, who had a unique canine companion named Tuny. Tuny was quite the character, often seen following local policeman Officer Jones around town. These little snippets of life paint a picture of early Knoxville that really brings warmth!

Exciting Changes Around Every Corner

As we transition from history to the present, the area around Walnut Avenue is still transforming. The current Daylight Building, with its many windows and skylights, adds a charming touch to the street. As part of ongoing renovations, the YWCA is undergoing upgrade plans, while new murals fill the city’s canvas, especially thanks to Valspar Paints’ Be Bright Campaign.

Community Engagement and Events

In addition to these fabulous developments on Walnut Avenue, the anticipation for the upcoming festival season is palpable with the return of a pedestrian-only zone in Market Square. As street closures return in time for exciting events like the Mardi Growl Parade, Knoxville residents can look forward to vibrant festivities just around the corner.

As Walnut Avenue gears up for exciting changes, the mix of history, new developments, and community activities promises to make this area not just lively, but also a lovely reminder of Knoxville’s rich tapestry.

With the coming transformations and a little sprinkle of nostalgia, it’s clear that Walnut Avenue will soon become a notable destination worth visiting—in no time, it could become as popular as Market Square!
