Knoxville, what a remarkable place to call home! On November 13, 2024, our very own community celebrated the achievements of a true local legend, Big Jim Haslam, during the East Tennessee Historical Society’s 10th annual East Tennessean of the Year award ceremony. Held at the delightful Cherokee Country Club, the event was so popular that tickets sold out faster than you can say “Pilot Flying J!”
Now, let’s take a quick stroll down memory lane, shall we? Big Jim Haslam first made his mark in Knoxville as a football player! After completing his studies and earning a degree in business, he ventured into entrepreneurship by purchasing a gas station in Virginia. Who knew that this would be just the start of something incredibly huge? Over the next several decades, he transformed that humble gas station into the thriving powerhouse known as Pilot Flying J, which is now headquartered right here in Knoxville—bringing job opportunities to a whopping 28,000 people across the nation!
It’s not just his business acumen that has the locals buzzing. Big Jim has also been a driving force in the political arena, serving as the fundraising chair for Republican icons like Howard Baker Jr. and Lamar Alexander. If there’s a money tree in Tennessee, we think Big Jim knows exactly where to shake it!
The excitement in the room was palpable as UT President Randy Boyd, who received the same honor last year with his wife Jenny, remarked that it was surprising Big Jim hadn’t received this recognition sooner. He even went as far as to declare him the “East Tennessean of the Century” – and you can’t get much higher praise than that!
During his speech, Haslam emphasized the importance of giving back and being actively involved in our blossoming community. He expressed his love for Knoxville and East Tennessee, highlighting them as two of the most special places in the country. It’s this kind of humility and commitment to service that truly sets him apart. A beautiful YouTube tribute was shown at the event, giving everyone a deeper insight into his impact over the years.
Foster shares that Guinness is a true gentle giant, bringing unconditional love and a calming presence to children who may be shy about reading aloud. It’s all about finding joy in simple moments, isn’t it?
Also, love those lovely blooms of spring? The West Hills Community Association is gearing up for the Dogwood Arts Bazillion Blooms initiative, urging residents to plant new dogwood trees! Mark your calendars for the Holiday at the Gazebo event on December 13, where you can make your orders for bare-root dogwood trees before the November 25 deadline.
