On November 13, 2024, our very own community celebrated the achievements of a true local legend, Big Jim Haslam, during the East Tennessee Historical Society’s 10th annual East Tennessean of the Year award ceremony. Held at the delightful Cherokee Country Club, the event was so popular that tickets sold out faster than you can say “Pilot Flying J!”

After completing his studies and earning a degree in business, he ventured into entrepreneurship by purchasing a gas station in Virginia. Who knew that this would be just the start of something incredibly huge? Over the next several decades, he transformed that humble gas station into the thriving powerhouse known as Pilot Flying J, which is now headquartered right here in Knoxville—bringing job opportunities to a whopping 28,000 people across the nation!
It’s not just his business acumen that has the locals buzzing. Big Jim has also been a driving force in the political arena, serving as the fundraising chair for Republican icons like Howard Baker Jr. and Lamar Alexander.
