Knoxville Food Hall Scandal: Owners Accused of Embezzling $190K

Knoxville Food Hall Owner Accuses SmashCity Owners of Embezzlement

Marble City Market Owner Says SmashCity Owners Stole $190K

Paul and Ashley Moody, the owners of Knoxville-based burger company SmashCity, are facing allegations of embezzling over $190,000 from Marble City Market, a popular food hall in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Moodys were hired to manage the food hall in 2022 with hopes of revitalizing its operations but are now accused of financial misconduct that has shocked the local dining community.

The Allegations

According to Doug White, co-owner of RSQ Management, which owns Marble City Market, Paul Moody is said to have stolen $876 in cash, written a $20,000 check to SmashCity without authorization, and made unauthorized deposits and transfers totaling $67,595.94 to his personal account instead of the management entity’s account. White reported the alleged embezzlement to law enforcement, leading to the initiation of a criminal investigation.

Legal Consequences

Paul and Ashley Moody now face a Class A felony charge of theft greater than $250,000 in Tennessee. A court date has been set to address the allegations. Despite attempts to reach out for comment, both parties have remained silent on the matter.

Business Implications

Following their departure as managers of Marble City Market, the Moodys also announced the relocation of their SmashCity business to a different venue. The move has drawn attention to the evolving situation surrounding Marble City Market and its recent management changes. The future of SmashCity’s presence in Knoxville now hangs in the balance as the legal proceedings unfold.

Continued Operations

While Marble City Market navigates the aftermath of the alleged embezzlement, it continues to operate with a focus on serving its patrons and maintaining a diverse selection of culinary offerings. The owners of the food hall have refrained from commenting on the situation, allowing the legal process to run its course.
