‘A Mentor and an Inspiration’: Knoxville Community Band Director Retires After 14 Years

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Knoxville Community Band, a staple of local music culture, completed their summer concert series on Sunday with a bittersweet note. Saying farewell to their longtime director Larry Hicks, the band marked the end of an era.

An Enduring Commitment to Music

I’ve committed myself for 67 years to the music. It’s going to be strange not having the pressures of performance because I’ve lived that all my life,” said Hicks, reflecting on his journey. After 14 years of directing and many more as a member, Hicks conducted his last concert, retiring his baton with a sense of pride and accomplishment.

A Leader, Friend, and Inspiration

Hicks’ impact on the band has been profound. “He’s been a mentor and an inspiration,” said trombonist Richard Vonhatten. “Really good friend of mine, and I have thoroughly enjoyed playing in the band under his direction.”

“He encourages everyone to be better, so not only within the band but outside of it as well,” added Laurie Pollard, a flutist and piccolo player. The community recognized that whoever will step into the role of the future band director will have big shoes to fill.

Looking Ahead

The band members expressed hope for the future. “I hope we can get somebody who’s at least close to as good a director as Larry was,” said Vonhatten. Pollard noted the return of former band members for Hicks’ final concert as a testament to his influence and contribution to the community.

A Time to Pass the Baton

With years of experience, having played and directed since the 7th grade, Hicks felt it was time to step down. “I just can’t say enough about what a wonderful group they are and how much fun it is to work with them. I know I’m going to miss them, but it’s time to go,” he said.

A Special Recognition

In honor of his years of service, the city presented Hicks with a proclamation at his last concert, declaring July 28, 2024, as “Larry Hicks Day.” The night was a perfect end, celebrating a man who dedicated his life to the joy and discipline of music.

This marks not just the conclusion of a leadership role, but the commendable journey of a man who touched many lives through his commitment to music and community.
