Knoxville Business Drama: Before Honeybee, Owner Targeted Other Companies

Business Coach’s Strategies Not Aligned with Knoxville Owners

Before Aaron Hensley took over Honeybee Coffee, he made offers to other Knoxville small businesses with promises to help them grow. However, his strategies did not align with theirs, ultimately leading to a decline in his offers.

Case of Puleo’s Pizzeria

One of the affected owners was Matthew Jackson, who acquired Puleo’s Pizzeria in West Knoxville. Despite an offer from Hensley to purchase the business outright for $40,000 in cash, Jackson declined due to disparities in vision and operational plans. Jackson highlighted that Hensley’s proposed changes, like switching staff to salaries and removing hourly pay, did not resonate with his management style and values.

Failed Business Ventures

Hensley’s attempts at business expansion did not stop with Puleo’s Pizzeria. He also approached other local businesses, including Simpl, with proposals that aimed at rapid growth and scaling. However, owners like Kendale Ball rejected these offers, citing concerns about the pace and magnitude of expansion.

Unfolding Chaos at Honeybee Coffee

Hensley had convinced Honeybee Coffee founder to hand over control of the business. Subsequently, the company witnessed a mass staff exodus and operational changes that led to disgruntlement among employees. Hensley’s vision of transforming Honeybee into a franchise under the name “Honeybee USA” did not sit well with many staff members, resulting in their resignation.

Breach of Ethical Conduct

Allegations of non-payment of staff and a shift from the traditional hourly wage and tips model further tarnished Hensley’s reputation. The departure of key individuals heightened concerns about the company’s practices and management.

Parting Ways and Legal Equations

In late June, Hensley expressed his intention to exit Honeybee Coffee, leaving the future of the company uncertain. Meanwhile, the company founder is seeking legal counsel to address the fallout from the business deal with Hensley, underscoring the challenges faced by small business owners in navigating such turbulent situations.

Lessons Learned

The incidents surrounding Honeybee Coffee shed light on the complexities of business partnerships and the importance of aligning values and visions before entering into agreements. The experiences of Knoxville entrepreneurs serve as cautionary tales for aspiring business owners and highlight the risks involved in pursuing rapid growth strategies.
