UT to use Knoxville city buses to combat parking issues

The University of Tennessee has teamed up with the City of Knoxville to tackle parking on campus. All Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) buses will offer transportation to UT students, staff, and faculty. Students and employees will be able to use their VolCards to access KAT buses along all 23 routes and three trolley lines.

Previous Coverage:

UT is also going to offer a park-and-ride permit for $99 a year. With the permit, students and employees will be able to park at the Knoxville Civic Auditorium’s Lot B on weekdays from 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. and catch one of UT’s T buses to campus. Those permits will go on sale in July.

UT Executive Director of Parking and Transportation Tanara Teal-Tate said the initiative will help create car capacity on campus. “This partnership with the City of Knoxville and Knoxville Area Transit will play a pivotal role in enabling us to create capacity on campus to accommodate growth and deliver the Volunteer experience for all students.”

“Providing practical commuter solutions is vital as we strive to transform the parking and transportation culture on campus. This partnership with the City of Knoxville and Knoxville Area Transit will play a pivotal role in enabling us to create capacity on campus to accommodate growth and deliver the Volunteer experience for all students.”

Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon shares these sentiments. “These partnership agreements are a win-win-win for UT, the City, and KAT. The City has more than 1,500 unused weekday parking spaces at the Coliseum garages, and almost half of those spaces will now be available to UT students, faculty, and staff. Plus, a new generation of commuters will be trying KAT and we anticipate them enjoying the transit experience. Together, these partnerships will make it easier for people to safely move around our city while also helping us reduce our carbon emissions.”

The new program goes into effect on Aug. 12.
