To welcome riders to the new system, KAT will offer free fares for the first two weeks after the launch. This initiative aims to help residents adjust to the new routes and schedules. The KAT Reimagined project is designed to improve reliability and accessibility to employment opportunities for all Knox County residents.
The new bus network will feature a total of 20 routes, significantly expanding service in the area. According to KAT, about 12,000 more residents will now have access to buses that come every 15 minutes. Additionally, the average person will be able to reach 18,300 jobs within a 45-minute trip, marking a 19% increase from the previous system.
Sunday bus service will also see significant improvements, with a 150% increase in availability. KAT officials believe that these changes will positively impact many local communities, making it easier for residents to find jobs and engage in daily activities.
While the new network will offer many benefits, it also means some bus stops have moved or been discontinued. To familiarize yourself with the new routes, KAT encourages people to download the free Transit app. This app provides users with detailed maps, route renderings, and stop locations.
For those with questions about the new changes, representatives are available by phone at 865-637-3000 or through email at katbus.com/contact.
As part of the city’s partnership with the University of Tennessee, students and staff will be able to ride KAT buses for free to and from campus. Another positive aspect of the new bus network is that discounted fares will be offered to seniors aged 65 and older, Medicare card holders, and people with disabilities.
Additionally, students in the Knox County Schools can ride the buses free of charge without needing a special pass.
One significant change in the system is the introduction of a new downtown connector route that will replace the free trolley service. This route will run every 10 to 12 minutes, helping to improve connectivity between downtown and various neighborhoods. For those traveling to and from the University of Tennessee, there will be eight buses per hour specifically serving this route.
The KAT Reimagined initiative aims to increase public transportation options for all residents of Knoxville and improve access to jobs and education. By offering a network that prioritizes frequency, reliability, and accessibility, KAT hopes to encourage more people to utilize public transportation in the area.
As the launch date approaches, many residents are eager to experience the changes firsthand. The excitement is building as public transportation in Knoxville gets a much-needed upgrade, promising a brighter and more accessible future for all.
