Knoxville – Democratic grassroots organizers in Knoxville are invigorated by the prospect of a Kamala Harris presidency, expressing hope that the nation’s first Black woman heading a major party ticket will mobilize voters in record numbers for the upcoming election.
Black voters in Knoxville are especially enthusiastic about Harris’s candidacy. The local reaction mirrors the enthusiasm nationwide, as Black voters across the country see Harris as a transformative opportunity. In the previous election, Black voters in Knoxville turned out overwhelmingly which resulted in a substantial increase in voter turnout in several majority-Black precincts.
Maleeyah Whiteside, a recent graduate, is preparing to vote for the first time. “As a young Black woman, seeing another Black woman have the chance to be president is so encouraging,” Whiteside said. “It gives us that boost of confidence to know that if she can do it, I can do anything I want to do, too.”
Umoja Abdul-Ahad, a co-founder of a local City Council Movement, believes that Harris’s candidacy provides an opportunity for the community to learn more about her. Abdul-Ahad stresses the importance of voting rights and education about the process for the community.
Local school teacher JC Carmichael saw a particular timing as an opportunity for Harris to gain momentum. “As an educator, I am looking at how the candidates plan to support the Department of Education,” he remarked. He is interested in their plans to address teacher shortages and their choice for Secretary of Education.
Alexandria Brown, a parent, expresses she feels better about voting for Harris than previously. “We’re fighting for the future of our democracy, and I’ll vote for Harris. The Democratic Party, in her opinion, needs to adapt to the country’s changing needs and adopt more progressive policies.”
Community advocate Rashaad Woods expresses his optimism in Harris. Woods hopes to see national candidates advocate for voting reforms for people with felony convictions and increased access to jobs and livable wages.
A local community leader noted a surge in community engagement following Harris’s nomination. The community group is intensifying efforts to educate voters and maximize voter turnout through information sessions and registration drives.
