Hey there, Knoxville! Are you ready for an exciting week? It’s Homecoming Week for the University of Tennessee, and this city is charged up with a spirit that’s hard to miss! Volunteers are ramping up the anticipation for the big game against Mississippi State on November 9, and let me tell you—there’s a party in the works that you’ll definitely want to be a part of!
One of the most anticipated parts of homecoming is the thrilling appearance of the Pride of the Southland Band. This year, about 450 returning alumni will join the current band members to put on an electrifying display during halftime. Can you just imagine the sight and sound? It’s bound to be a true spectacle as they stir up that familiar pride in the crowd!
Now, let’s talk about one of the highlights that you won’t want to miss. The halftime show will be a nostalgic celebration of the band’s rich history, with special attention given to the beloved anthem, “Rocky Top.” This classic tune was arranged by Barry McDonald back in 1972, and guess what? He’s behind the arrangements for all the songs that will be performed this time around as well! It brings a smile to our faces to think about how this song has become Tennessee football’s unofficial anthem, doesn’t it?
Excitement is brewing as Lafe Cook, the current director of the Dobyns-Bennett High School Band and a former drum major for the Pride, will take to the field as the alumni drum major during the game. Having Cook at the helm is sure to add an extra layer of energy and enthusiasm to the performance. This isn’t just about football; it’s about connecting with the past and celebrating the journey!
Homecoming Week is more than just a prelude to a football game. It’s about the memories, the friendships, and the shared experiences that shape the tapestry of Tennessee pride. From tailgating to reunions, every day leading up to the big showdown gives everyone—students, alumni, and fans alike—the opportunity to relive those cherished moments.
So, if you’re in or near Knoxville during this fantastic time, come join the fun! Dust off your most spirited orange and white gear, grab your friends (or make some new ones), and soak in the atmosphere that only homecoming can provide. Whether you’re cheering from the stands or enjoying the live music from the band, you’ll be part of something truly special.
Knoxville, let’s paint this town orange! For all the Volunteers and VFLs out there, this week is a shining reminder of why we love being a part of this community. We can’t wait to see everyone come together to cheer on our team and lift the spirit of those who once donned the orange and white. Here’s to another unforgettable Homecoming Week!
