Farragut, TN – A serious hit-and-run incident has left a local student injured while waiting for a school bus. The Knox County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) is actively investigating the case, which took place early Thursday morning near the intersection of Thornton Drive and Hughlan Drive.
According to reports, the hit-and-run occurred around 7:30 a.m. A juvenile girl, who was waiting for her school bus, was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene. A passerby discovered the victim lying on the ground shortly after the bus arrived. The KCSO confirmed that the quick response from bystanders helped in alerting emergency services.
The victim was soon transported to The University of Tennessee Medical Center. By the evening of the same day, authorities stated she was in critical but stable condition, which raised concerns among the community regarding the safety of students at bus stops.
Following the incident, the KCSO called upon local residents to assist in the investigation. They urged anyone living in the vicinity to check their security cameras for any footage that could help identify the vehicle involved. The KCSO has encouraged anyone with information to contact them at 865-215-2243. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
Knox County Schools Superintendent Jon Rysewyk expressed his deep concern regarding the incident. In a released statement, he offered thoughts and prayers to the student and her family, emphasizing the importance of community vigilance around school bus stops. Rysewyk stated, “We can’t emphasize enough how important it is that drivers take care in the early morning and afternoon when students are walking to and from bus stops. He called on everyone in the community to work together to ensure the safety of students during their commutes.
The investigation led by the KCSO Traffic Unit is still in its early stages, with the type of vehicle involved in the hit-and-run remaining unknown. As the community awaits more information, the focus remains on the victim’s recovery and the hope for a swift resolution to the case.
This unfortunate event highlights the need for heightened awareness and caution in areas where students gather for school transportation. As families send their children off to school, incidents like this remind everyone to keep a watchful eye and ensure safety for all students.
