In a heart-wrenching decision, Fieldhouse Social, the vibrant sports bar located near the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, has officially closed its doors for good after more than a decade of service to the community. Known for its lively atmosphere and notably featuring the “largest TV in the Southland”, this hot spot was a favorite among locals and visitors alike, drawing crowds eager to catch a game or enjoy a meal. The closure, which took place in late December, just as families gathered to celebrate the Christmas holidays, has left a palpable sense of loss in the area.
Taking a moment of reflection, Randy Burleson, the owner behind Burleson Brands, which brought us Fieldhouse Social, shared insights into the reasons behind this difficult decision. Rapid changes around the UT campus, largely driven by ongoing utility construction, played a significant role in the shifting landscape. This transformation since 2015, along with the loss of Walmart as an anchor tenant back in 2019, greatly impacted the establishment’s long-term viability. With the campus community evolving, the restaurant faced challenges that were hard to ignore.
Once a bustling stretch of restaurants and bars, the Strip has been seeing big changes as developers focus on creating a more pedestrian-friendly environment. As student housing projects are sprouting up to accommodate an ever-growing enrollment at UT, older businesses are feeling the pinch. In addition to Fieldhouse Social, another Burleson Brands location, Stefanos Pizza, also shut down in late 2022. Even the flagship Copper Cellar, part of the same restaurant family, has recently closed, highlighting an ongoing transformation in this beloved neighborhood.
Located at 2525 University Commons Way, Fieldhouse Social was adored for its diverse menu that included shareable plates, salads, sandwiches, and four standout entrees. The atmosphere offered diners not only a chance to enjoy delicious food but also ample outdoor seating that encouraged community gatherings. Adding to the experience was the presence of several TVs—the star being a jaw-dropping 23-foot screen that made game days electric.
As word of the closure began to circulate on social media, the situation prompted some chatter and conjecture among the community. In light of this, Burleson reassured patrons that the decision to close was a mutual one with the landlord, paving the way for new opportunities in the area. Importantly, all employees were given the chance to transition to other Burleson locations or a new restaurant opening soon in Lenoir City. This means that no one had to lose their job as a result of this closure—an admirable move during such a challenging time.
