Theatre Knoxville Downtown Presents ‘The Revolutionists’ Exploring Female Power in Turbulent Times

Knoxville, TN – Theatre Knoxville Downtown is currently showcasing a remarkable production of The Revolutionists, a play written by Lauren Gunderson in 2018. Directed by Courtney Woolard, a self-proclaimed Francophile, this engaging piece takes the audience back to Paris during a time of great uncertainty—the French Reign of Terror in 1793.

An Emotional Journey Through History

With a backdrop of vivid historical events, the play dives deep into the lives of four real women who played significant roles in this tumultuous period. As the story unfolds, audiences are taken on an emotional rollercoaster, filled with moments of laughter, tears, anger, and reflection. It beautifully captures the essence of change and turmoil while reminding us of the power of storytelling.

Woolard, in collaboration with Saralee Peccolo-Taylor, a French professor at Pellissippi State Community College, intertwines historical facts with humor, making the production both educational and entertaining. This combination keeps the audience engaged as they witness the struggles of the characters who are each fighting for their rights and a voice in a time when speaking out could easily lead to a death sentence.

Meet the Revolutionists

The play features four prominent female characters:

  • Olympe de Gouges, portrayed by Francesca Reggio, is a playwright grappling with writer’s block and the constant threat of the guillotine.
  • Marianne Angelle, played by Joyce Jones, is a dedicated abolitionist advocating for the rights of Black citizens and seeking Olympe’s help to rally support.
  • Charlotte Corday, represented by Angel Orenstein, is set on making a statement before her own execution, desperately needing the perfect final words.
  • Marie Antoinette, depicted by Rebecca Gomez, seeks to reclaim her story amidst the chaos of public opinion as she faces her impending doom.

Each character brings a unique perspective to the play, creating a powerful narrative that showcases their individual struggles. Olympe’s challenge is balancing her artistic passions with her desire to speak out. Marianne embodies the fierce spirit of feminism and is torn between love and her convictions. Charlotte’s determination shines as she fights to be recognized for her political actions rather than her relationships. Finally, Marie Antoinette’s journey highlights the complexity of her existence as she navigates public perception and personal truth.

The Production Elements

Beyond the storytelling, the production excels in its technical execution. Stage Manager Zoe Jurgensen and Technical Director Joseph Johnson ensure the transitions between scenes are seamless, allowing the narrative to flow without interruption. Johnson’s lighting choices enhance the emotional depth of each moment, while Jurgensen skillfully manages the pacing of the dialogue.

The costumes, designed by Angel Orenstein, are simple yet striking, effectively representing the strength and character of each lead. Additionally, the musical direction led by Casey Maxwell incorporates a refreshing a cappella revolutionary ballad that ties the women’s stories together, adding another layer to the overall performance.
