Knoxville is gearing up for an exciting month of theatre, with several shows set to delight audiences in September. From new musicals to classic plays, there’s something for everyone in this vibrant city known for its arts scene.
First up is the much-anticipated new musical Knoxville, which opens at the Clarence Brown Theatre on September 6, following preview performances on September 4 and 5. Music is from the talented Stephen Flaherty, with lyrics from Lynn Ahrens, and it features a book by the late Frank Galati. This musical is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel A Death in the Family by James Agee. Audiences can catch this remarkable show until September 22.
Another fascinating show is The Revolutionists by Lauren Gunderson, directed by Courtney Woolard. This play tells the story of four real women who lived through the tumultuous times of the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. The Revolutionists will run from September 6 to September 22, with performances on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 3 PM.
On the classical side, you can catch Our Town, written by Thornton Wilder, at the Old City Performing Arts Center. This timeless play, which won the 1938 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, is directed by Joshua Peterson, and will run from September 12 to September 29. Performances are scheduled for Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2:30 PM.
Theater 23 will present Dr. Biscotti and the Human Condition, written and directed by Lisa Soland. This unique play will have four performances at the Knoxville Convention Center on September 20 and 21 at 7:30 PM, and again on September 21 and 22 at 2:30 PM.
The Wordplayers will present A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, directed by Christi Watson. This classic play will take place at the Erin Presbyterian Church from September 12 to September 22, with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM and Sundays at 2:30 PM.
Meanwhile, the Clarence Brown Theatre’s Lab Theatre will feature Cry It Out, a play by Molly Smith Metzler. This heartwarming comedy explores the friendship between young mothers during nap time, while diving into themes of motherhood and social class in America. It opens on September 20 following preview performances on September 18 and 19, and will run until October 5.
For families, the Knoxville Children’s Theatre will host Magic Tree House: Dinosaurs Before Dark. This is an adaptation of the popular children’s book that takes siblings back in time to the age of dinosaurs. Shows run from September 13 to September 29, making it a must-see for the younger audience.
