Bittersweet goodbyes ceremony

Emotional Farewells in Knoxville

Knoxville, TN – In a heartfelt farewell last week, five Knox County Commissioners shared emotional goodbyes during their final meeting. Their departures marked the end of a significant chapter not only in their lives but also for the county. The commissioners—Dasha Lundy, Carson Dailey, John Schoonmaker, Richie Beeler, and Kyle Ward—spoke candidly about their experiences and relationships built over the years.

Final Meeting Highlights

Even though recognizing the departing commissioners was not initially on the meeting agenda, the occasion turned into a memorable tribute. Each commissioner took a moment to express gratitude and reminisce about their time in office. The evening culminated in promises of a celebratory dinner planned with the remaining and newly elected commissioners to honor the departing members.

Carson Dailey’s Contributions

Carson Dailey completed two terms as the representative for South Knox District 9. He was surprised by Knoxville Vice Mayor Tommy Smith, who praised Dailey’s efforts. Smith described them as “co-caretakers” of the area despite occasionally differing over opinions. In a touching moment, Smith presented Dailey with a sign he found on a county road, symbolizing Dailey’s commitment to keeping the area clean by promoting trash pick-up and community beautification initiatives.

Words of Gratitude

As the meeting progressed, each commissioner shared a few remarks about their experiences. Richie Beeler, who is a minister by profession, expressed appreciation for his fellow commissioners. He called Lundy a “warrior for her community,” mentioning how passionately she fought for her beliefs. Beeler praised Schoonmaker and Dailey, stating, “No one could ever have done this better.”.

Expressions of Friendship

Lundy, with tears in her eyes, acknowledged the opportunity to serve, saying, “I’m very grateful to sit in this seat and grateful to be here.” In a brief but impactful statement, Kyle Ward remarked that while the commission members held different perspectives, they had formed a family-like bond.

Schoonmaker’s Reflection

John Schoonmaker reflected on his time on the commission, which spanned nine and a half years. He cherished attending countless commission meetings and expressed gratitude towards former Commissioner Charles Busler. “This is the best job I ever had. I wish the next group has as much fun as I had,” he said, revealing the joy he found in his role.

Dailey’s Commitment to Colorful Discussions

Dailey also took the opportunity to share his sentiments, stating, “All my votes have been for the best of Knox County.” He emphasized the importance of leaving discussions within the meetings, stating, “when we walk out that door we leave it. It’s forgotten.” This underlined a spirit of collaboration despite differences.

Terry Hill’s Reflections

Knox County Chairwoman Terry Hill also shared her thoughts about her four years in the position. She mentioned the various challenges they faced as a commission, which included a tornado, navigating a “30-year snowstorm,” and managing the ambulance contract. In closing, she acknowledged the emotional significance of the moment.

A New Beginning

As these five commissioners step away, they leave behind a legacy of dedication, service, and community involvement. Their emotional farewell serves as a reminder of the hard work and commitment that goes into public service. With their departure, the county looks forward to welcoming new faces, while the outgoing commissioners take cherished memories of their time together.
