Poor Merrick struggled with homelessness and poverty, and sadly, no one, including modern medicine, can fully explain his medical condition even today.
As the story unfolds, we watch as Merrick’s life takes a turn when he ends up in a human novelty exhibition, or, in modern terms, a freak show. This path ultimately leads him to the compassionate care of Dr. Frederick Treves, played by Casey Cain, who worked at the nearby London Hospital. Through their movement towards friendship, Merrick not only found shelter but also a sense of belonging, stepping into the world of high society and forming relationships with well-known figures like Princess Alexandra and a famous actress of the time.
A Set Designed For Dread
The play’s atmosphere is brought to life on a striking black and white set that interestingly resembles a haunted house. White panels adorned with hand- and brush-smeared black paint create an evocative backdrop that enhances the psychological journeys of the characters. The clever use of an opaque curtain also provides suspense, as various characters enter and exit, displayed first as mysterious shadows before revealing their true selves.
