The excitement in Knoxville is palpable as residents have outdone themselves this election season! Knox County has set a brand new record for early voting in a presidential election, with a staggering 163,303 early votes cast. That’s approximately 10,000 more than just three years ago in 2020! As we gear up for Election Day on November 5, it’s looking very likely that this record could be surpassed again with the total number of votes expected to climb ever higher.
To ensure everything runs smoothly, Chris Davis, the Administrator for the Knox County Election Commission, was seen working diligently at the commission’s westside office on a quiet Sunday. He noted, “We’re getting ready for election day at 78 locations across Knox County. Making sure workers are ready to go and, ultimately, to vote as many people as possible on November 5!”
Picture this: a calm office, the streets whispering with tranquility, and Chris working alone, while his team takes a well-deserved rest. And who can blame them? These hard-working folks have been putting in 12-hour days ever since early voting kicked off two weeks ago! Chris recognized their efforts, saying there will be “plenty of work” on Tuesday.
With the buzz around town, Chris also mentioned, “If we get even a good election day, probably over 50-plus-thousand, we’ll break our all-time record in Knox County.” It’s safe to say that the influx of new residents over the past four years is changing the voting game.
While turnout soared, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Some residents voiced their dissatisfaction about wait times or expressed concern over rules and restrictions regarding absentee ballots. According to Chris, a few folks had requested ballots but waited too long to submit them—something that happens in high-volume situations like this. “Given the scale of what we’ve seen, some friction was expected,” he added with understanding.
Looking forward to Election Night, Chris predicts a long but rewarding shift. Under Tennessee law, election commissions must hold off on counting any of the votes until the last ballot is cast. So as poll workers get ready to open doors at 8 a.m. Tuesday, everyone in line by 8 p.m. will get the chance to cast their vote!
As national polls indicate a tight presidential race, it’s understandable that emotions are running high. Chris advises voters to keep cool, reassuring everyone, “I know that tensions are high. I know that we all want to vote for our desired candidate, but remember these are your neighbors, your friends, your coworkers. Just have a little bit of grace, and let’s get through this together.”
One of the highlights for Chris and his team? Seeing first-time voters embrace the chance to express themselves at the polls! Their enthusiasm is what drives the Election Commission, as they reflect on the importance of the right to vote.
As we close in on Election Day, Knoxville’s spirit shines bright with determination and democracy. Everyone is invited to get involved and make their voices heard—so don’t forget to cast your vote!
