Hey, Knoxville residents and visitors! If you’ve ever tried to find parking in downtown Knoxville, you know it can be a bit of a challenge. Well, good news is on the horizon because big changes are coming to the parking system as the city looks to fix issues and bring in more revenue!
The current parking system isn’t enough to cover its costs. An independent consulting firm has thrown in their two cents, suggesting a plan to help ease your parking woes and ensure you find a spot close to your desired destination. Mayor Indya Kincannon’s Chief of Staff, David Brace, shared that “we’re recommending these next steps,” with a little wiggle room for adjustments along the way.
Despite the upcoming changes, free night and weekend parking isn’t going anywhere! It will remain in place, but there’s a small twist. On Saturdays, if you want to park in the popular Market Square Garage, you’ll now have to pay a flat fee of just $3 during the daytime, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.. So, feel free to park in other areas if you find yourself there on a Saturday!
Mark your calendars folks, because starting in February, there are a few essential changes coming your way. If you park in any garage during the paid hours, you’ll need to pay for your parking, even if you leave when it’s free. Yep, it’s true! Payment will be required regardless of when you leave. And say goodbye to fumbling around for coins because street parking payments will now be made through the ParkMobile app. Simple, right?
Now, here’s the scoop on prices: expect an increase across the board. Parking hours will be free from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. from Monday to Saturday and all day on Sundays. That’s a win for late-night adventurers and weekend warriors!
Now, before you park your car, you might want to listen closely. The Knoxville City Council is considering increasing parking violation fines as well. For instance, if you find yourself parked in a fire lane or too close to a hydrant, the fine will hike from $25 to $35, with a whopping $44 if the fines aren’t paid within 10 days. Ouch! Other violations, like not paying for your parking or parking in a no-parking zone will see a fine of $25, or an increased fee of $34 if you miss the deadline.
Curious to learn more? The City Council believes in keeping its citizens informed, which is why they’re hosting a workshop to discuss all these changes! It’ll kick off at 4 p.m. on November 7 at the main assembly room of the City-Council Building, located at 400 Main St. It’s a great opportunity for you to ask questions and express any concerns you may have!
These changes are designed to enhance your parking experience while making sure the city can keep things running smoothly. It’s an evolving system, so if adjustments are necessary, city officials are open to that down the line. Keep your eyes peeled for further updates as February approaches, and don’t forget to mark those calendars for the city council workshop on November 7!
