In the heart of Clinton, TN, there’s a palpable sense of loss as the community remembers a cherished figure, Jerry Neal Ferguson, who passed away peacefully on Monday, September 23, 2024. He was 76 years old. Born in Waynesville, North Carolina, Jerry was a memorable personality who touched the lives of many.

A Colorful Childhood and Early Adventures

Jerry entered this world in Waynesville, the son of Taylor and Ruby Ferguson. Growing up, he spent his days in the picturesque surroundings of Maggie Valley, where he attended Waynesville Township High School. He wasn’t just another student; he brought school spirit to life by volunteering as the Mountaineer mascot. His youthful energy didn’t stop there! Summers were filled with excitement back at home, working at Ghost Town in the Sky, where he performed as a buck dancer, clogger, and even a gunfighter, entertaining visitors who traveled from far and wide.

Service and Sacrifice

In a brave move of dedication and patriotism, Jerry enlisted in the United States Navy after high school, serving valiantly during the Vietnam War and participating in key events like the Bay of Pigs. He spent four and a half years on iconic aircraft carriers like the USS Enterprise and the USS America, gaining experiences and stories that would stay with him for a lifetime.

New Beginnings in Tennessee

Once back from service, Jerry moved to Oak Ridge, TN, in 1968 with his beloved wife, Gwen, and their daughter, Kimberly. He worked as an electrician at Y12 and soon found his way into a role that involved training and supervision after obtaining his degree from the University of Tennessee. This marked the beginning of a remarkable 30-year career.

A Life of Community Involvement

Jerry was more than just a hard worker; he was actively engaged in his community. He was a faithful member of Memorial United Methodist Church, contributing through various avenues including their food pantry and the 323 North Main bluegrass and acoustic band. His love for music shone bright, and his unique talent delighted many.

Beyond the church, Jerry took on leadership roles in the Clinton Jaycees and also dedicated his time as a poll worker in Anderson County. His contributions and kindness did not go unnoticed, earning him the respect and admiration of those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Family Bonds

Jerry leaves behind a loving family that includes his wife of 59 years, Gwen, and three wonderful daughters: Kim Eby, Grey Ferguson Collier (married to Daniel), and Laura Ferguson Hubbs (married to Michael). He was a grandfather to Mollie and Parker Collier who brought him immense joy. His legacy continues on through his half-sister-in-law, June Hashbarger, brother-in-law Ed Thomas, and many nieces and nephews.

Final Farewells

Friends, family, and loved ones are invited to a gathering on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, at Holley Gamble Funeral Home for a heartfelt service before proceeding to Grandview Memorial Garden for a graveside service at noon with Rev. Scott Wilks officiating.

In honoring Jerry’s legacy, the family graciously requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Food Pantry or the Sound System Fund at Memorial United Methodist Church of Clinton. Through these gestures, his spirit of kindness will undoubtedly live on.
