Founded in 1970, the nonprofit has evolved to connect youth with dedicated mentors, significantly enriching their academic and social experiences. A special Mentorship Breakfast event is scheduled for April 4 to honor volunteers, while the organization continues to seek mentors for over 100 children currently waiting for support.
Knoxville, Tennessee is buzzing with excitement as Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee marks an impressive milestone this year—its 55th anniversary! What began in 1970 as the “Big Brothers of Knoxville” and the “Knoxville Big Sisters Program” has grown and evolved into a remarkable nonprofit that has made a significant impact on the lives of countless young people.
Way back in 1970, the foundations were laid for a community transformation that would resonate through generations. Fast forward to 1975, and the two programs combined forces to create a unified effort to support the youth of Knoxville. Over the years, this organization expanded its reach by merging with similar initiatives in nearby towns, becoming the celebrated entity we know today.
The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee remains clear: provide academic and social resources that empower young people to truly succeed. This nonprofit connects kids with mentors through personalized one-on-one mentorship programs, and the magic happens in a couple of different ways. The site-based mentorship program has mentors meeting with their matched kids once a week for up to an hour at locations like schools and after-school programs. Meanwhile, the community-based program allows for mentors to meet their little buddies up to three times a month!
One of the heartwarming outcomes of these mentorships is the friendships that blossom. Many mentor-mentee pairings not only thrive during the official program duration but evolve into lasting and supportive relationships that stretch well into the future. Mentors strive to empower these young minds to define and pursue their unique pathways to success, giving them the tools they need to navigate their journeys.
As part of this celebratory year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee is all set to host a special Mentorship Breakfast event on April 4. This gathering will honor the devoted mentors who have helped shape the lives of so many children and will celebrate the invaluable contributions of the organization over the past 55 years. It’s a time to reflect on the impact made and to look forward to many more years of serving the community.
Despite the success of the programs, there’s still work to be done. Currently, there are over 100 children waiting for a mentor. This highlights the ongoing need for more men to step up and become role models. The organization not only emphasizes the importance of mentorship but particularly encourages male mentorship due to the critical role it plays in shaping young boys into responsible, contributing members of society.
Consider stories like that of Taylor, a dedicated mentor, and his little brother, Adarius. Through various life changes, including marriage and job transitions, their bond has remained steadfast. Adarius has expressed how crucial the mentorship has been, stating that without his mentor, he’d be unsure about his direction in life.
This initiative isn’t just about mentorship; it’s about building a stronger community. It’s about neighbor helping neighbor, lifting each other up, and creating a support system that lasts. So, if you find yourself inspired by the stories of impact and friendship, consider getting involved! Whether you’re looking to become a mentor or simply want to support the ongoing efforts, there’s a place for everyone in this thriving mission of transformation.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee is a shining example of the incredible change that can happen when the community comes together to support its young members. As they celebrate their 55-year legacy, here’s to many more years of making a difference, one young person at a time!
