Boyd’s Jig and Reel Recognized as One of the Best Bars in Tennessee

Knoxville – Boyd’s Jig and Reel has been celebrated as one of the best bars in Tennessee. Nestled at 101 South Central Street, this beloved establishment offers more than just your typical pub experience. It stands as a unique haven for Scottish music lovers and a cherished spot in Knoxville’s Old City.

A Unique Journey to Bar Ownership

Owner Jenny Boyd’s path to listing her bar among Tennessee’s finest is as mesmerizing as the bar itself. Jenny, who found herself deeply connected to Scottish music in her 30s, had never imagined owning a bar. “I think we’re a one-off,” Jenny mused. “I would never do another one like this, but I think it is great for our area and the music of East Tennessee.”

A Downtown Lifeline

Boyd’s Jig and Reel opened its doors in 2011, a crucial time for downtown Knoxville. As businesses closed, Boyd’s Jig and Reel brought a revitalizing spirit to the area. The warm and cozy atmosphere of the bar, housed in an old building, immediately became a local favorite.

The Magic of Scottish Music

Jenny’s passion for Scottish music has been the heartbeat of Boyd’s Jig and Reel. “When I heard Scottish music the first time, I cried,” she shared. The pub hosts music sessions that alternate between Irish and Scottish on Thursday nights, and embraces Old Time and Bluegrass on Tuesdays, with singer/songwriters taking the stage on Wednesdays. Weekends bring a variety of local and regional roots music.

Preserving East Tennessee’s Musical Heritage

One of Jenny’s core missions is to promote and preserve the music of East Tennessee. “So much of it is passed from player to player and may not be written down,” she emphasized. Drawing younger generations into these sessions is especially important to her.

A Personal Touch

Jenny’s personal touch is evident throughout the pub. Every piece of decor, from stained glass to pewter plates, tells a story. The walls are adorned with pictures of Scottish and traditional musicians, creating a tapestry of cultural heritage.

A Testament to Authenticity

Beyond its music, Boyd’s Jig and Reel boasts an incredible selection of Scotch whiskies, with “1077 whiskies and counting.” Chef Will Pelcher and manager Gina Truitt, along with an outstanding team, ensure that every visit is memorable. “All we’re about is being real,” Jenny said proudly.

This recognition stands as a testament to Boyd’s Jig and Reel’s authentic charm and cultural vibrancy. It remains a cornerstone of Knoxville’s dynamic bar scene.
