News Summary

On April 12, a police incident involving an armed man near Belle Morris Elementary prompted a lockdown of the school as a precautionary measure. Officers responded to a disturbance on Fairview Street, where a man was reportedly damaging vehicles. After attempts to deescalate the situation failed, shots were fired, leaving the man critically injured. The police department and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are conducting investigations to ensure proper protocol was followed.

Lockdown at Belle Morris Elementary Following Police Incident

In the heart of Knoxville, an unsettling event unfolded on Tuesday, April 12, that left the community buzzing with concern and curiosity. Just a stone’s throw from Belle Morris Elementary School, a police incident involving an armed man created ripples of anxiety. Thankfully, the situation was managed with care, keeping the students and staff safe.

What Happened?

Here’s a snapshot of the day’s events: Around 1:15 p.m., officers were alerted to a domestic disturbance that unraveled on the 2600 block of Fairview Street. Witnesses reported a man acting erratically, damaging parked vehicles with a small ax or hatchet. By 1:20 p.m., as police arrived on the scene, they encountered 52-year-old Christopher Arons, still armed and clearly in distress.

Despite the officers’ attempts to deescalate the situation by urging Arons to set down the ax, he continued to approach them aggressively. Unfortunately, due to his actions and in the interest of public safety, officers had no choice but to respond. Shots were fired, striking Arons and prompting immediate medical assistance.

Immediate Response and Safety Measures

As the police dealt with the situation, Belle Morris Elementary School was placed on lockdown out of an abundance of caution. This temporary safety measure ensured that students remained secure while officers managed the tense scene nearby. Fortunately, the lockdown was lifted well before the school day ended, allowing parents to pick up their children without any disruptions.

Arons was quickly transported to the hospital, where his condition is currently described as critical but stable. It was later revealed that he was under the influence of alcohol during the incident and had two outstanding warrants in Knox County.

Aftermath and Investigation

Recognizing the need for thorough review and transparency, the Knoxville Police Department has promised that the incident will be examined internally to ensure all actions taken were in line with departmental policy. To maintain fairness during the investigation, two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on routine administrative leave while the details are sorted out.

It is noteworthy that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has launched a separate investigation into the incident at the request of the Knox County District Attorney General. This process will include a review of body camera footage from the event, which is expected to be released in the coming weeks, giving the community insight into what transpired.

Looking Ahead

The community is understandably anxious for additional updates regarding both the condition of Arons and the ongoing investigation. As we all process the events of the day, it’s essential to come together and support one another. In moments that make us uneasy, the strength of our neighborhood shines through when we take care of each other.

Though our elementary school was briefly placed on lockdown, we are grateful that students and staff were kept safe during this alarming event. We can all breathe a little easier knowing that our local authorities managed the situation effectively. For now, let’s keep our minds on the well-being of our friends and family, and remain updated as more information becomes available.
