Exploring Art in Knoxville: Exciting Exhibition and Lecture Series on Offer

Knoxville is buzzing with excitement as the Knoxville Museum of Art (KMA) showcases a remarkable ongoing exhibition titled “Higher Ground: A Century of the Visual Arts in East Tennessee.” This rich display dives deep into the artistic heritage of our region, shedding light on the diverse array of visual art that has originated from East Tennessee over the last hundred years.

Join Us for an Engaging Evening

If you’re an art enthusiast or just someone who enjoys a good evening out, make sure to mark your calendar for Thursday, September 12th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This event will kick off with some light refreshments and a cash bar at 5:30 p.m., providing the perfect opportunity to mingle with fellow art lovers.

The night takes a fascinating turn when a lecture begins at 6:00 p.m. Given the speakers are none other than Jack Neely and Stephen Wicks, we can expect a rich dive into the art history of the region. Both have been instrumental in editing a nearly 300-page catalog, which includes essays from various contributors, highlighting the narratives and artistry that have shaped East Tennessee’s visual arts scene.

This exhibition is not just a showcase; it’s a journey through time. “Finding Higher Ground” is a new series of educational programming connected to the ongoing exhibition. It aims to help visitors navigate the intricate and fascinating stories told through the permanent collection at KMA. So, if you’re curious about the context behind some of the beautiful pieces, this is the perfect chance to get deeper insights.

Featured Artwork

Among the notable pieces featured in the exhibition is a stunning work by Lloyd Branson. Titled “Ellen McClung Berry,” this oil painting created in 1920 stands out with its impressive dimensions of 59 5/8 x 47 1/2 inches. The painting beautifully embodies the artistic sensibilities of the era and reflects the artist’s unique approach, providing a window into the cultural landscape of Knoxville during that time.
