Knoxville, Tennessee, is buzzing with excitement as Amazon has just unveiled its brand new delivery facility, known as DNA6. This state-of-the-art center aims to deliver tens of thousands of packages daily, boosting both local jobs and delivery efficiency.
The facility has made quite the leap since opening up. T.J. Martinez, the site leader of DNA6, enthusiastically shares that they started by shipping around 8,000 packages daily and are now gearing up to handle a whopping 92,000 packages. That’s some serious growth, and it’s exciting to see that kind of action right here in our community!
So, what exactly does DNA6 do? This facility plays a vital role in Amazon’s “last-mile” delivery service. Packages that arrive at DNA6 are already packed up and ready to go. They get sorted in the building before delivery partners take over to bring them right to customers’ doorsteps. Jessica Breaux, a senior manager of economic development with Amazon explains, “Everything that comes into this building is already packaged just in the way that it looks as it gets to the front door.” Talk about convenient!
The impact of DNA6 is not just about packages. Over 200 new jobs have been created directly within Amazon. It doesn’t stop there, though. Logistics companies, like TC4 Logistics, have also seen growth through partnerships with Amazon. Shane Stanifer, who owns TC4, describes his experience saying, “In a matter of months, we’ve gone from no business to having 70 drivers on the road every week.” That’s a fantastic turnaround and a promising sign for the local economy!
With this new facility comes faster delivery times. Martinez touched on how the service has evolved, noting that before launching DNA6, it often took two to four days for packages to arrive in Knoxville. Now, customers can expect their packages in just one or two days! That’s like a little gift at the front door.
Another exciting thing about the DNA6 facility is its use of custom electric delivery vehicles. In fact, it is the first Amazon delivery station in Knoxville to implement this eco-friendly option. With more than 80 electric delivery vehicles (EDVs) parked and ready to roll, the impact on the environment is as positive as the delivery times. Charles Cousins, an Amazon driver trainer, shared that these vehicles make the process more efficient. The technology in the vehicles helps drivers not only to navigate but also streamlines the delivery process. “When you actually put the vehicle in park, your GPS is right there in front of you,” Cousins explained.
The launch of DNA6 is undeniably a big step for Knoxville. With an investment of over $30 million and a growing number of local jobs, this facility is helping shape the future of package delivery while also contributing to the community’s economic health.
As Knoxville residents, we can look forward to quicker deliveries and the potential for more job opportunities. It’s a win-win situation that highlights how breakthroughs in technology and logistics can positively affect our lives.
