Alcoa, TN Hosts Unique Dumpster Diner for Habitat for Humanity Volunteers

Alcoa, TN Hosts Unique “Dumpster Diner” for Habitat for Humanity Volunteers

On a sunny Wednesday afternoon, the atmosphere at a Blount County Habitat for Humanity worksite in Alcoa was lively and filled with the delightful aroma of grilling. This day was special as Knoxville’s ViVida Dumpster Rental organized a unique event they called a “Dumpster Diner“, showcasing a playful twist on the traditional construction site cookout.

A Grateful Gesture

Every year, ViVida Dumpster Rental generously donates several dumpsters to assist Habitat for Humanity projects in the area. However, this year, they took it a step further. Instead of simply providing dumpsters, they brought a specially modified dumpster outfitted for cooking. Volunteers were treated to burgers and hotdogs grilled right inside this clean and innovative cooking station. This effort was designed as a way to express gratitude to the many volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to the important work of building homes for families in need.

Words from the Franchise Owner

Serge Emelkin, owner of the Knoxville ViVida franchise, shared his enthusiasm for this unique initiative. “The Dumpster Diner is one of the ways we get involved in the community and show appreciation to our clients and volunteers,” he explained. Emelkin emphasized how supporting local initiatives, sports teams, and nonprofit organizations are core values of their business. This year was no different as they expanded their outreach to Habitat for Humanity, an organization that resonates deeply with their community mission.

The Inspiration Behind the Event

The idea for this unconventional cookout originated from the Nashville location of ViVida, which has been organizing similar events since its founding in 2018. Inspired by their success, Emelkin decided to adapt this concept for Knoxville. “We saw how much fun everyone had in Nashville using Green Egg grills set up inside a dumpster and thought, why not bring it here?” he stated, mentioning the collaboration with local businesses that helped secure the grills for their own dumpster.

Community Engagement

Emelkin and his wife moved back to Knoxville, hoping to create a business that would allow them more quality time with their family, while also contributing positively to the community. “This event is just one of the many ways we aim to give back,” he said. “We’re proud to support not just Habitat for Humanity, but also local churches, schools, and youth sports teams.” Their commitment to community involvement is clear, as they seek to foster connections and encourage community spirit through such events.

Volunteers Enjoy the Feast

As volunteers gathered at the worksite, laughter and conversations filled the air. Many expressed their appreciation not just for the meal but the chance to bond further with others who share their commitment to helping families in need. The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, highlighting the spirit of collaboration and compassion that Habitat for Humanity stands for.

Building More than Just Homes

Events like this are about more than food; they’re about creating a sense of community and belonging. Over the years, Habitat for Humanity has built more than just houses; they’ve built relationships and a strong network of support among volunteers and families alike. With the help of businesses like ViVida Dumpster Rental, the organization can continue to thrive and make a difference in the lives of many.

Looking Ahead

ViVida Dumpster Rental plans to continue its community engagement efforts in the future, organizing more events to bring people together. Their success with the Dumpster Diner this year shows that creative ideas can lead to unexpected joys and stronger connections within the community. As they look forward to the next project, one thing is clear: their dedication to making a difference is stronger than ever.
