FESTIVALS

Alive After Five

On Friday evenings, a music series will let Knoxvillians “come alive after five.”

Alvin Garrett is featured on Alive After Five. Alvin Garrett is a Grammy-nominated songwriter, vocalist, bassist, and producer. Garrett has written and orchestrated songs for Joe, Kelly Rowland, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard, and many others, and has collaborated with R&B and soul musicians Johnny Gill and Noel Gourdin. Garrett has received a Soul Train Award, a Dove Award, and a Stellar Award in addition to a Grammy nomination. In addition to his personal achievements in the music industry, you may recognize him as Ruben Studdard’s music director on season two of American Idol.

Garrett’s brilliant composition, charming grin, and spine-tingling voice are reminiscent of Sam Cooke and Al Green, two soul music superstars.

“I am a pioneer of Inspirational Soul Music,” Alvin says when asked to define the type of music he makes. This preacher’s son from Alabama has weaved a common thread of optimism and inspiration across his twenty-year career in the entertainment world. Garrett’s inspiring imprint can be found in all of his musical undertakings, whether it’s R&B, Gospel, Pop, or Jazz.

Big Ears Festival

The Big Ears Festival is an annual music festival organized and produced by AC Entertainment in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Ashley Capps, the founder of AC Entertainment, created the festival in 2009. Ashley Capps coordinated the festival in collaboration with Jason Boardman of Pilot Light in Knoxville and Chris Molinski of the Knoxville Museum of Art.

Antony And The Johnsons, Burning Star Core, Nicolas Collins, David Daniell, Dan Deacon, Fence Kitchen, Fennesz, Fennesz/linkous/minor, Michael Gira, Philip Glass, Larkin Grimm, Neil Hamburger, Jon Hassell, Matmos, The Necks, Negativland, Pauline Oliveros, Wendy Sutter, Shaking Ray Levis, and Ned Rothenberg were among the artists who performed at the 2009 edition, which took place February 6.

Terry Riley, a well-known composer, was named the Big Ears Festival’s first “Artist in Residence” in 2010. Terry Riley and a slew of collaborators performed three days of concerts at the festival to commemorate his 75th birthday. Bryce Dessner of the band The National was a guest curator of the event, in addition to Riley’s role as “Artist in Residence.”

In addition to the musical events, Jessica Dessner, Bryce Dessner’s sister, coordinated the first Big Ears film festival at the Knoxville Museum of Art in 2010, which included a Sufjan Stevens exhibition called The BQE.

Big Ears 2011, which had been scheduled for the first half of the year, was postponed and then discreetly canceled owing to scheduling issues.

Brewer's Jam

On Saturday afternoon, 3,500 thirsty beer and music fans jammed onto the World’s Fair Park grass to celebrate a love for craft beer.

Brewers’ Jam is Knoxville’s craft beer Super Bowl, which is now in its 18th year and continues to grow for regional brewers and beer fans alike. Tommy Higdon, associate brewer for Woodruff Brewing, the beverage behind Knoxville’s legendary Downtown Grill and Brewery, is particularly moved by the incident.

Every Friday before the major event on Saturday, Higdon and his crew hold a brewers’ reception for the festival on the fifth floor of the brewery.

Higdon added, “We truly date back to the very beginning of the Brewers’ Jam.”.
