Knoxville Dazzled by Unique Aerial Performance: Solastalgia

This month, Knoxville was treated to a breathtaking spectacle that turned a routine evening into an unforgettable experience. The city was alive with excitement on October 13 and 15 as a stunning show called Solastalgia unfolded on the side of The Tennessean hotel. It was hard to keep your eyes on the road while crossing the Clinch Avenue viaduct with the magnetic performances taking place just a glance away!

Imagine this: four talented dancers gracefully suspended from the side of a seven-story building, leaping and twirling as they glided through the air on a single cord. The sight was mesmerizing, leaving everyone below gasping in awe with each soaring arc. The talented cast was not just dancing; they were conveying a deeper message that resonated with everyone who attended.

A Journey Through Art and Emotion

The production was a labor of love by the Cattywampus Puppet Council and One World Circus, and it took two whole years of preparation to bring Solastalgia to life. Rachel Miford, the executive and artistic director of Cattywampus, admitted she had her doubts about how the audience would embrace the performance. “We’ve been working on this for two years. Ultimately, it was up to the audience to trust us to lead them on this journey,” she explained.

Solastalgia isn’t just a catchy title; it’s a term created to describe the feeling of homesickness we experience when the places we hold dear begin to change or face threats—especially relevant in today’s discussion about climate change. And trust us, this show was an engaging way to confront those heavy themes.

A Dark Yet Intriguing Act

Act I, titled “The Great Unravelling Circus,” took place at World’s Fair Park Amphitheater, where audiences were exposed to thought-provoking themes like climate disaster and social inequalities, all through the unique lens of classic circus performances. Imagine a ringmaster munching on noodles served in a gas mask while lamenting how humans are paving their own path to extinction! Or a frog who faces boiling water while the trapeze artists above remain blissfully unaware of the turmoil beneath them.

There were moments of comedy mixed with sobering reflections, including a humorous take on a capitalist escaping his cage to enforce a command over the animals, who eventually band together to tuck him right back into captivity. The show created a chorus of puppets, narrating the question we all avoid: ”What if it’s already too late?” Each moving metaphor stirred the audience’s thoughts until the production culminated in a powerful “funeral for humanity,” which certainly got everyone thinking deeply.

A Celebration of Hope

The performance concluded with a delightful twist: a marching band leading a festive procession by the water’s edge, turning the somber mood into a vibrant dance party. The audience was invited to place their written fears into a bowl and witness them go up in flames, a symbolic shedding of their anxieties. Suddenly, the atmosphere shifted, and with the lively spirit of the band playing, everyone found themselves dancing, feeling as though they had breathed new life into their worries.

Joy Amidst Uncertainty

As the audience followed the sound of the music, they gathered at the foot of the hotel, where the vertical dancers, like clock hands, synchronized their movements to a touching cello solo. It was a beautifully chaotic moment that lingered in everyone’s hearts as a voice resonated: “90 seconds to midnight—what a time to be alive!”

Following this heart-stirring moment, shadow puppets and towering lantern creations lit up, guiding the attendees into a dreamlike finale, singing, “I will parade into and through these unraveling times, with you, beside you. What a time to be alive!”

Get Involved!

The event may have been free, but the Castleypuss Puppet Council and One World Circus will be hosting significant fundraising events soon to continue creating such incredible experiences for the community. Cattywampus Puppet Council’s annual Fall Ball is set for October 27, while One World Circus will welcome you to their “Match My Freak” performance on November 8 and 9. It’s an excellent opportunity for everyone to immerse themselves in the magic of local arts and support these fantastic organizations.

So, if you find yourself in Knoxville, keep an eye out for similar events. There’s always something happening in this vibrant city, making it a place where creativity shines and community thrives!
