Bravery and Teamwork Shine in Flood-Ravaged Tennessee
Imagine standing in the heart of Knoxville, as the sun peeks over the horizon, and the air is filled with a sense of urgency and determination. For days now, a dedicated group of police officers and firefighters have been working tirelessly in some of the most remote areas of Tennessee, battling the aftermath of devastating floods. Their mission? To find those who may have been swept away by the rushing waters.
Behind the Scenes of the Rescue Effort
On September 30, a specialized rescue team from Knoxville rolled out at a bright and early 4 a.m. Start. The crew was led by Lt. Lance Earlywine, who coordinated the efforts with a clear goal in mind: to save lives. Comprising 10 police officers and 2 firefighters, this highly trained group is swift water rescue certified and well-prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.
“We are here to help,” Earlywine shared as the team made their way to southeast Washington County. “Today, we’re going back to some areas marked by another team for further investigation. We want to ensure nothing goes unexamined as we search for those who may still be trapped or lost.” A boat was brought along to navigate the waters of the Nolichucky River, which has been transformed into a dangerous and unpredictable entity.
The K-9 Unit: An Unsung Hero
Among these heroes, K9 handler Candy Stooksbury was hard at work with her canine partner, Pearl, a remarkable Porcelaine breed specially trained to locate deceased individuals. Giving commands in French, Stooksbury and Pearl traversed the riverbanks, keeping a keen eye out for any signs of life or evidence that would lead them to those they seek.
As Stooksbury explained, “We follow leads based on where other teams previously identified potential spots. Each time we come back, there’s hope that we may find someone.” Their determination exemplifies the hard work and collaboration of teams across Tennessee, as they partnered with teams from Limestone and Johnson City, as well as the Nevada Task Force 1, who arrived to lend their expertise.
The Community Comes Together
The spirit of unity in the face of adversity is palpable throughout the flood zone. Limestone Fire Chief Tim Jaynes expressed gratitude toward the weary but committed rescuers, stating, “For the county, for the community, we’re so appreciative of these guys taking time coming to help us. It’s what we do in Tennessee, and it’s amazing the work they’re doing.” This sentiment resonates with everyone involved in the ongoing efforts.
Challenges in the Field
As the team worked under a sky dotted with helicopters from the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the National Guard, officer Travis Harvey noted the harsh conditions. “It’s very desolate looking out here,” he pointed out while observing the surroundings. “We came across swarms of yellowjackets and fields of tomatoes covered in muck.” These visuals paint a vivid picture of the challenges faced by first responders in this trying environment.

Initially, this Knoxville team had planned to wrap up their efforts on October 2, but as is often the case in emergency situations, their work was far from complete. It’s crucial to finish examining all areas thoroughly to ensure no stone is left unturned.
